4 Excellent Movies To Watch As a College Student
by Lewis Robinson
As any alumnus will tell you, college can be stressful! Luckily, you can always put a movie on and relax. So, if you're sorely in need of some downtime, here are four excellent movies to watch as a college student.
1. Legally Blonde
Legally Blonde is, arguably, the most iconic college rom-com ever made. If you haven't seen it yet, be sure to watch it immediately! The movie revolves around Elle, a sorority girl whose high society boyfriend breaks up with her. In order to prove that she's as serious as him, Elle follows her ex to Harvard Law School. While her original goal was to reunite with Warner (her ex-boyfriend), she ends up realizing her own talent in the field of law. Legally Blonde is not only a great college romance but also a feminist celebration. Unlike some other movies, Legally Blonde doesn't reprimand women for acting feminine. Instead, Elle manages to win a case while being her extremely feminine self. After watching this movie, a lot of young women are sure to get student loans and hurry to college!
2. Shiva Baby
Shiva Baby is a newer movie that speaks to every college student's anxieties. While it's a comedy, the movie is full to the brim with stress-inducing and relatable moments. Basically, the film revolves around Danielle, a college student who's working as a sugar baby (unbeknownst to her family). When she's forced to attend a funeral in her hometown, she has to lie about her goals and profession. Things only get worse when one of her sugar daddies arrives. What commences is a soap opera's worth of plot twists and unfortunate events. Luckily, the viewers get some relief at the very end. While this may sound like an extremely stressful movie, it can be a relief for college students going through similar situations. So, grab a lox bagel and check out Shiva Baby.
3. Happy Death Day
If you're a fan of horror and collegiate hijinks, then Happy Death Day is your film. This hilarious flick is basically a mix of Groundhog Day and Halloween. Tree, a vain sorority girl, finds herself repeating the same day over and over again. Unfortunately, this day always ends with her getting murdered by a masked figure. With the help of her new, somewhat nerdy friends, she tries to find the killer and stop the cycle. While this sounds like a drama-filled plot, Happy Death Day is primarily a comedy. The movie is chock-full of hilarious moments, including a particularly stand-out scene where Tree walks through campus naked. If you end up liking this movie, be sure to check out its more science fiction-oriented sequel.
4. The Stanford Prison Experiment
As you may know, the real-life basis for The Stanford Prison Experiment film was disproven fairly recently. The controversial study, which took place in the seventies, was found to be manipulated and thus unreliable. However, the outcome of the experiment is somewhat less interesting than what actually happened. Twenty-four Stanford students were separated into two random groups - prisoners and guards. As footage and testimony show, the guards began using this newfound power to torture the prisoners. Instead of lasting several weeks as planned, the experiment ended after six days. This early end still wasn't enough to undo the damage done. While this may not seem like an enjoyable film to watch, The Stanford Prison Experiment is a college classic. The experiment and movie, while flawed, portray a fascinating image of human behavior. If you're a psychology major, this is definitely a must-see!
Final Thoughts
If you have time to watch a movie this week, definitely consider choosing one of these options. Pop some popcorn and have a great time!
