Casinos in the Movies: Are They True to Real Life?

Throughout the history of cinema, casinos have often found their way into the movies. There’s something particularly glamorous about casino locations, so it’s no wonder so many directors and writers have chosen to film scenes (or sometimes entire movies!) there.

Films such as the classic James Bond movie Dr. No and the more recent Casino Royale have very intense casino scenes that appear very glamorous to those watching. On top of that, we see films such as 21 that are almost entirely about casino games. But are they like real life or are they fantasy?

That’s what we’re going to find out today. Because wouldn't it be amazing if we could relive the experiences of our favorite film characters in the real world?

Okay, so we’re probably not actually going to be able to perform casino heists or fight bad guys, but being able to visit the setting of these casinos is a step in the right direction.

And it’s not just films that are inspired by casinos. We see a lot of video games that are set in casinos. Consider the world of online casinos, for example. A lot of the games we see there are based stylistically on land-based casinos, both old and new.

In fact, there are tons of great classic casino-themed roulette, blackjack and slot games online. You just need to find the right casino site to play them in the first place! Take a look at the best online casinos with sweepstakes for more on that.

In the meantime, however, we’re about to find out more about movie casinos and if they’re true to real life.

Are the casinos themselves real?

We might consider the movie casinos we see to be just a set, as is the case with a lot of movies. But actually, many of the casinos are real and are hired out by the film crew just to create the movie.

Let’s take a look at a couple of classic examples of this happening. With most of the following, the casinos still exist to this day, so you can go and visit if you want to!

Dr. No (1962)

This classic Bond film is widely considered to be the best of all time. It oozes glitz and glamor in ways that many Hollywood producers have tried and failed to replicate over time.

The casino scenes here were filmed in Les Ambassadeurs casino. It’s located in Mayfair, one of the richest parts of London. The casino is super exclusive, so you’ll need to try hard to get in. But it’s not out of reach!

Uncut Gems (2019)

The casino scenes in this hit Adam Sandler movie are nowhere near as fancy as they are in James Bond films but there’s something super cool about the aesthetic of Uncut Gems and the way in which it’s delivered.

If you want to pay a visit to the location the casino scene was filmed in, you can do just that. You’ll find it at Mohegan Sun in Connecticut. It’s a massive monolith of a casino, so be prepared to get completely lost in there!

21 (2008)

A bunch of college students learning how to count cards to rig casino games and get themselves into all kinds of trouble? Sounds like a pretty cool movie. And it is. We recommend watching 21 if you haven’t yet!

We picked this movie because it’s filmed in a few different casino locations, some of which can be visited in the world’s casino capital, Las Vegas.

Firstly, you’ve got Red Rock, which is located on the outskirts of town. Then, there’s the since-demolished Riviera hotel and casino, on the strip itself. A third and final casino location for 21 is Planet Hollywood, a very cool place to visit.

So, are casinos in the movies true to real life?

The fact that you can go to most of the casinos where these movies were filmed shows that they are true to real life. They might seem like magical, mystical entities, such is their incredible aura, but the casinos in the movies are very much real and true to real life!

The only exception to this really, would be animated movies.

What actually happens in the movies might be a little unrealistic. For example, the card counting in 21 is probably a bit ridiculous. But the story is cool and it’s in a real location, and that makes it a great movie to watch.

If you love the casinos in the movies, there’s no reason you can’t get a taste of it in real life. So, what are you waiting for?
