7 Best Dog Movies of All Time

by Lewis Robinson

You really can't go wrong when you mix movie magic with man's best friend. Dogs are great main characters and can pull genuine laughs and heartfelt cries from any audience. Without giving away any plot twists or spoilers, here are some of the best dog movies of all time.

1. Marley & Me (2008)

Based on a true story and derived from a popular novel, "Marley & Me" follows the life of a newlywed couple and their dog, Marley, over the course of 14 years of career changes and family building. Marley is a rambunctious pup, who probably could have benefited from some cbd for dogs, but he's loveable and entertaining all the same. It's full of heartfelt moments and relatability. You'll laugh, cry and probably watch it again.

2. Beethoven (1992)

"Beethoven" is a perfect example of a classic combination of puppy mischief and reluctant dad. In this film, Beethoven, a cute St. Bernard puppy, grows up to wreak havoc on his family and their home, in a fun and loveable way, of course. Naturally, the film also includes an exciting tale of puppy heroism and several heartwarming moments of love between dad and dog. It's a sweet story of the bond that forms when a family welcomes a pet and a little bit of exaggerated excitement all in one movie.

3. Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey (1993)

Disney's "Homeward Bound" is a remake of the 1963 film "The Incredible Journey" told from the perspective of a silly American bulldog named Chance, a wise golden retriever named Shadow, and a pampered cat named Sassy. When the three pets are left in the care of a family friend for too long, they embark on a wild adventure through the Sierra Nevada Mountains on a quest to find their family. Meanwhile, the family searches for them as well. Every child of the '90s undoubtedly remembers this movie with heartwarming fondness.

4. Turner & Hooch (1989)

"Turner & Hooch" stars Tom Hanks as Scott Turner, alongside a sloppy, junkyard dog named Hooch. Turner is a detective with a predilection for neatness, and Hooch is a drooling, undomesticated dog with a habit of causing trouble. The two are partnered together to fight crime. The movie follows the unlikely pair through a series of fun, dangerous and hilarious turns of events. Turner's life is turned upside down and his will tested, but it's packed with laughs for the audience.

5. A Dog's Journey (2019)

You only need to see the movie trailer for "A Dog's Journey" to know that it is a tearjerker. Despite only being three years old, it is arguably an instant classic in the world of dog cinematography. It's a sequel to "A Dog's Purpose" and based on the novel by W. Bruce Cameron. The plot is formed around the theme of the connection and unconditional love that can form between pet and owner. Prepare yourself for an emotional journey as you watch the dog live, die and return to the family he loves over and over again.

6. Best in Show (2000)

"Best in Show" follows a group of eccentric dog owners through their quest to win the Mayflower Dog Show's coveted trophy. It's packed with hilarious hijinks and showcases an exaggerated version of the world of dog shows and the weird behaviors of obsessive dog parents. While the dogs may not be the main characters, they certainly steal the show, and the comedy genius of Catherine O'Hare and Eugene Levy makes it unforgettable.

7. 101 Dalmatians (1996)

How could anyone possibly mention the best dog movies of all time without talking about "101 Dalmatians?" The famous fur-clad villain, Cruella de Vil chases down a litter of puppies and their parents in pursuit of a spotted fur coat to add to her collection. You can watch the original animated film, the live-action remake, the gaggle of sequels, and even Cruella's recently released prequel.

Whether you want a laugh, a good cry or an emotional journey, you can likely find them all in any of the movies on this list. There's something for everyone in each. Don't forget the popcorn and the tissues!
