8 Impressive Movies About Artificial Intelligence

by Miranda Woolridge

Art of Cinema - Best Artificial Intelligence Films

Today humanity has come close to creating a full-fledged artificial intelligence. Of course, each of us is interested in learning more about AI and how it can affect our lives. The cinema offers a ton of similar stories, and many films have become truly iconic (such as The Terminator, The Matrix, or Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey). In this review, we'll talk about lesser-known paintings that deserve your attention.

I, Robot (2004)

The sci-fi film I, Robot, based on the works of Isaac Asimov's Three Laws of Robotics, raises questions about the relationship between man and machine and the security of a civilization overflowing with robots. Detective Del Spooner, who believes that his daughter died due to the robot, investigates the murder of his longtime acquaintance and scientist Alfred Lanning. The main suspect is Alfred's unusual personal assistant - Sunny robot, endowed with emotions and a particular free choice program of behavior. In the course of a complex investigation, another character is revealed who is interested in the death of Dr. Lenning. The film offers an exciting plot, pleasant actors (starring Will Smith), and unconventional dilemmas. Well worth it for a few hours.

Her (2013)

Theodore's life has given him a severe challenge. The wife, to whom he may still feel something, left and involved him in a complicated divorce process. And the rather monotonous work of writing letters for other people does not bring pleasure. Frustrated and lonely, Theodore unexpectedly finds support in the face of an advanced operating system capable of conducting emotional conversations, adapting to the interlocutor, and even developing independently. Gradually, between Theodore and his virtual girlfriend, a relationship is established that has already become the norm for the future world. The film won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. And the most interesting question - “what is love, and can a person fall in love with AI” gets an unexpected answer.

Ex Machina (2015)

The head of a large company, the mysterious inventor Nathan, entrusts one of his subordinates with an important task. Programmer Caleb will have to go to a remote cabin in the mountains, owned by his boss. There Caleb is waiting for Ava, an attractive and interesting robot girl, created by Nathan according to the tastes of the programmer. The hero must conduct a test for artificial intelligence, which at the same time will become a test for himself because every day, it becomes more difficult for him to fight his attraction to Ave. The special effects created for the picture were awarded an Oscar.

A.I.: Artificial Intelligence (2001)

It’s one of Steven Spielberg's unique films that made it a tribute to his friend Stanley Kubrick. In the future, people are actively using robots in all spheres of life. There are robotic babysitters, robot assistants, and robots that satisfy the sexual needs of humans. Artificial boy David was created with only one purpose - to give his love to the family. But one day, he turns out to be an exile and makes a journey full of dangerous adventures in order, like Pinocchio, to turn into a "real boy".

The project’s development began in the 70s of the last century, but the film was released only decades later. It is also a challenging movie that asks difficult questions and shows robots from an unfamiliar side.

Blade Runner 2049 (2017)

Blade Runner 2049 also shows people who created many androids, or "replicants", in their image and likeness and made them their faithful helpers in the dirtiest work. However, the high development of replicants made a person afraid of their uprising due to which models were created, prone to unquestioning obedience. The old self-willed models are subject to destruction by representatives of the special Blade Runner squad. One of the "fleeing" during the investigation is faced with evidence that the replicants are not as far from the person as society believes.

Shortly before the film’s presentation, several short films explaining and expanding the plot were released, shot by various directors. The movie won Academy Awards for Best Visual Effects and Best Cinematography.

Bicentennial Man (1999)

An old film that has not lost its relevance and will cause you powerful emotions when watching. The Martin family is lucky to live in an era of technological breakthroughs when robots have become commonplace, and almost anyone can buy them for themselves. One day, the head of the family, Richard, decides that it is also time for a robot butler to appear in his house.

A robot named Andy is gradually joining the family, maintaining an especially warm relationship with the youngest inhabitant of the house, Richard's daughter named Amanda. With his acquaintance with the Martins, Andy's long journey begins, spanning two whole centuries, during which he will have time to study a person better than any psychologist and gain a soul and even a human appearance. The film is based on the novel of the same name by Isaac Asimov and the novel The Positron Man based on it.

Chappie (2015)

In the Chappie movie’s dystopian reality, unconscious droids are primarily used for law enforcement and patrolling the streets. But one day, an enthusiastic scientist independently creates artificial intelligence, which is no different from a person - he has his own opinion, feels, develops, and even creates.

A robot that is implanted with this intelligence falls into the hands of criminals who hope to use it for their purposes. Unfortunately, they will soon discover that Chappy (as the robot was named) himself needs protection, because, despite his unique brain, he behaves exactly like a child. The viewer will be interested in watching the plot and the acting, and the movie will evoke a lot of emotions.

Trancendence (2014)

In the heat of scientific research, the scientist Will Caster found a great idea. He wants to produce artificial intelligence of extraordinary power. Caster puts into the brainchild all the knowledge that humanity has received. But this concept has opponents. They kill followers of the scientist and in every possible way interfere with the conduct of experiments. Only the closest ones remain on the side of the desperate explorer: his wife and best friend. An excellent script allows you to watch this film with interest, and Johnny Depp's acting will also bring pleasant aesthetic emotions.

Robot’s Child (2019)

Another interesting movie was released in 2019. After a global cataclysm, humanity is dying out. An emergency program is automatically activated in the underground bunker, and the humanoid robot "Mother" grows a human child from the embryo. The girl brought up under the careful supervision of "Mother", has never seen either the surface of the Earth or other people. But one day her world turns upside down when a woman appears on the threshold of the shelter asking for help. It is a bonus to our list.
