Surfing among the fans and fellow creators of the Feelin’ Film podcast Facebook group, I’ve come to virtually know and break internet bread with a gentleman by the names of J.B. Huffman. He’s a voracious movie fan who has a temperament for examining and celebrating all forms of masculinity. As a fellow father, those stories and archetypes grab him the most to the point where he decided to make a podcast series dedicated to the movies that hit us dads. Welcome to Manly Movies! Like all good men, he doesn’t do anything half-ass. I was honored to participate as J.B.’s first official guest to talk about Field in Dreams.
As the school teacher in the room, I cannot resist good news like this. With two pre-teen kids of my own, I’m all about showing solid classic films to children. The “oldies” are rich in content, language, and are creative sometimes to a greater degree than the modern offerings today with all of their bells, whistles, and advanced technology. I was pleased to see this news from Cinedigm and their Film Detective streaming service.
Cinedigm, the leading independent streaming company super-serving enthusiast fan bases, announced today that The Film Detective (TFD), the classic film restoration and streaming company, will premiere the original film series, Classic Films for Kids, on Saturday, April 2.
Classic Films for Kids will be hosted by Jennifer Churchill, classic film enthusiast and author of Movies are Magic, the children’s book dedicated to an engaging and educational look at the history of film, which features an introduction from Turner Classic Movies (TCM) primetime host Ben Mankiewicz. She is joined by co-host, son Weston, age 7, exploring family-friendly programming with Golden Age stars from Abbott and Costello to Shirley Temple.
The first season of Classic Films for Kids will feature full-length, classic films, contextualized with insight and commentary. Initial films include Jack and the Beanstalk (1952), starring Bud Abbott and Lou Costello; The Little Princess (1939), starring Shirley Temple; Steamboat Bill, Jr. (1928), starring Buster Keaton; and the Fleischer Brothers’ classic animation, Gulliver’s Travels (1939).
New episodes will premiere every Saturday morning at 11 a.m. ET on The Film Detective channel, followed by SVOD releases on TFD’s classic film and television app, beginning with Jack and the Beanstalk on April 2.
“It’s so important to make sure kids know about these films,” said Churchill. “A lot of kids only see modern movies with fast editing, explosions and CGI. It’s really important for them to know the history of film and that these movies exist.”
“We are thrilled to partner with Jennifer to bring new life to these family-friendly classics,” said Phil Hopkins, president of TFD. “Audiences of all ages will enjoy Jennifer and Weston’s love of the classics and learn why teaching new audiences about the history of film is so essential.”
Classic Films for Kids is the latest in a series of collaborations between TFD and Churchill, who’s exclusive audio commentary has been featured recently on such TFD special-edition Blu-ray and DVD releases as Dancing Pirate (1936), The Fabulous Dorseys (1947) and the upcoming Girl on a Chain Gang (1966), being released April 19.

She insists that she can buy the house by winning a Paramount Pictures screenwriting contest. After all, she's been spending her time writing an epic Star Trek screenplay. When her sister Audrey refuses, Wendy is determined to enter the contest anyway. She escapes her group home with the local dog and embarks on a journey to Los Angeles. This set up results in a lot of hijinks, including bus crashes, attempted robberies and Klingon conversations. Depiction of Asperger's aside, the movie is a lot of fun, especially for Star Trek nerds. When it comes to the movie's actual portrayal of the diagnosis, it seems to be mostly accurate. However, it does fail to portray the amount of anxiety that those on the spectrum generally feel. Despite this, it's a good-hearted film that manages to humanize a character with Asperger's.
3. Adam
Adam is an interesting film as it dives into a less-explored aspect of autism - romance. Specifically, romance with neurotypical people. Although the movie has a bittersweet ending, it does leave the viewer with both hope and a less stygmatized view of those on the spectrum. Unlike many other films on the subject, Adam has a clear diagonsis of Asperger's. The electrical engineer, played by Hugh Dancy, exhibits clear traits of the condition, including having planned meals every night and experiencing extreme sensory overload. Throughout the film, Asperger's Syndrome is explained to the audience through Beth, a teacher and author who gets in a relationship with Adam. When Beth asks what it's like to have Asperger's, Adam responds that it just 'is'. This emphasizes how normal those with Asperger's feel. While the condition is seen as a disability or a tragedy, those on the spectrum don't often identify as disabled. Unfortunately, while the two have chemistry, Adam eventually breaks up with Beth. Despite this, the movie ends with Adam conquering many of his anxieties, showing that his romance with Beth was both valid and beneficial.

Cinematography and landscape aren't the only things this picture has to offer. The audio, on the other hand, is awe-inspiring. This is one of the best documentaries on photography I've seen, and one of the best overall. As well as an overlooked lighthearted flick.

Hollywood has been churning out movie musicals for decades. While the genre experienced somewhat of a decline in the seventies, it's steadily regaining popularity. One of the most solid entries in the genre is Hairspray, the movie adaptation of the Broadway musical. If you'd like to learn more about this endlessly entertaining film, read on for a review of Hairspray.
Plot
The plot of Hairspray, while not original, is one of the most solid movie musical storylines out there. The film centers around Tracy Turnblad, an overweight teenage girl in the sixties. Tracy, who is a talented singer and dancer, dreams of starring on the Corny Collins show like some of her classmates. Unfortunately, her weight makes this nearly impossible. When cool guy Link helps get her in, she quickly becomes popular. During this transition, Tracy is introduced to the black community in her town. She comes to grips with her own privilege and tries to help out. After a long battle, and some espionage involving a giant hairspray can, the team manages to integrate the Corny Collins show. Why is the movie called Hairspray? Well, Tracy's signature hairstyle requires a lot of lift, which means she uses a ton of the signature product. Watching this flick may leave you wanting to know how to use leave in conditioner! All in all, the plot is pretty solid. It allows for smooth transitions, a believable build and a satisfying emotional payoff.
Musical Numbers
When you watch movie musicals, you're probably not doing it for the dialogue. These movies are usually best during the song breaks. Sure, not all movie musicals have fantastical song and dance sequences. Some, like the famous Sweeney Todd adaptation, involve barely any movement at all. While this can still be entertaining in its own way, Hairspray definitely doesn't fall into that category. Most of the movie is spent in a blur of peppy music and fun dance numbers. From the very beginning to the end of the credits, there are nineteen songs to enjoy. Almost all of these are instantly iconic and memorable. The songs were composed by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman for the original Broadway musical. Since the show started on Broadway, these songs leave a lot of room for lavish dance numbers and set changes. The movie definitely takes advantage of this, along with its extended abilities as a film. For instance, “Welcome To the Sixties” takes place all over town, as opposed to a couple of sets. One of the standout numbers is definitely “You Can't Stop The Beat.” The song is catchy, the dancing is contagious and the message rings clear. While the musical numbers aren't exactly subtle. each one is executed well (which is more than can be said for many modern movie musicals).
Themes
The themes in Hairspray are, admittedly, fairly obvious. However, that doesn't mean these themes aren't important or well-represented in the film. Overall, the movie seems to focus on prejudice. Both Tracy and the black community are judged based on looks. At the Corny Collins show, the black actors are only given a day to shine. There are also scenes that touch on police brutality. In fact, the movie decided to take out a song that took place in jail. Since the medium of film creates more realism, this was a great way to lend seriousness to the subject. Unfortunately, the portrayal of this theme doesn't quite hold up today. Tracy is somewhat of a white savior. She ends up being a leading figure in the protests for integration. However, the black characters are still fleshed out and active, so it doesn't feel too exploitative. In general, the themes feel well-portrayed and heartfelt.
If you're looking for a fun movie to watch, you can't go wrong with Hairspray. Grab some popcorn, hit the lights and get ready to dance!
If you're looking for a movie that's light-hearted and funny, then Ron's Gone Wrong is definitely worth watching. This comical movie was written by Peter Baynham and directed by Sarah Smith and Jean-Philippe Vine and produced by Julie Lockhart and Lara Breay. The storyline revolves around a schoolboy named Barney who receives a robot named Ron as a gift. However, things start to go wrong when Ron starts to malfunction, drawing the attention of a shady executive. Despite a few sad undertones, the movie is overall very comedic and enjoyable.
The Plot
In the movie Ron's Gone Wrong, a tech giant named Bubble unveils their latest creation: the solution selling friendship B-bot. These robots are designed to help make friends, using Marc Weidell's friendship algorithm installed in every one of them. However, one middle schooler named Barney Pudowski does not own a B-bot. His former childhood friends, Savannah, Rich, Noah, and Ava, have all become absorbed by their individual B-bots.
Eventually, Barney gets a B-bot as a late birthday present. However, he quickly learns that it is defective and glitchy. The bot repeatedly says offensive things and makes bad decisions that get Barney into trouble. He doesn't want to upset his father by returning it, so he takes it back to the Bubble store himself.
As it turns out, all the B-bots have these glitches because of a bug in the friendship algorithm. If one person downloads a bot's code, they can unlock its hidden functions, including the ability to turn off safety features.
The Problem
Rich finds out about this and starts to cause trouble with his own B-bot. The bots run wild, and Savannah becomes publicly humiliated. Ultimately Barney is held responsible for the giant disaster at school with the wild B-bots and is suspended. The Bubble company pursues his bot, Ron, in order to destroy him, so Ron and Barney run away together.
Barney tries to keep Ron safe because he views the quirky B-bot as his one true friend, but it isn't long before Barney realizes they can't stay out in the woods forever. Ron will need to charge, and Barney has a scary asthma attack that could take his life.
Ron does his best to get help for his friend, Barney, and in the end, Rich, Savanah, Noah, and Ava work together to help find Barney. Unfortunately, Ron is confiscated. As Barney wakes up in a hospital bed, he sees the original inventor of B-bots, Marc. Marc always wanted his B-bots to be more about making real friendships and connections and never meant for their programming to turn into what it was today. Marc hands Barney a "fixed" Ron in hopes of helping ease his pain.
The Ending
Barney doesn't want anything to do with the fixed version of Ron since it no longer acts and thinks like Ron and is missing all the quirky things that Barney grew to love about his B-bot. Marc wants to help Barney but informs him the company is no longer in his control. They hatch a plan for Barney to get into Bubble headquarters and find Ron's programming.
Seeing that Bubble has direct access to everyone's B-bot and realizing that everyone is just as lonely as he was, Barney suggests upgrading all the B-bots to have Ron's flaws. However, this means that Ron will be dispersed.
In the end, all of the kids get their own upgraded bots with Ron's code, and they are finally able to connect on a real level. In a turn of events, Marc is able to get his position back with Bubble company by blackmailing Andrew with a recording of him using the B-bots to spy.
A few months down the road, you see Barney and his friends connecting on a real level. His friend's B-bots are no longer a tool to keep them from communicating, and although Barney doesn't have his own B-bot any longer, he seems happy and integrated with real people. The movie ends, showing Ron's face on the Bubble tower smiling, leaving you feeling with a sense of happiness and as though Ron is still there looking out for Barney.
If you're looking for something light and fun, then check out Ron's Gone Wrong. You won't regret it.
The 1992 Disney Film, Newsies celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2022. This film helped to kick off several people's careers. Since the film has come out, there have been numerous live theatrical performances. All in all, this cult classic remains a favorite of many people today.
Plot
The plot of Newsies is based on the real-life newsboy strike of 1899. At this time, newsboys needed to buy all of the newspapers they planned to sell to the general public and could not sell back any newspapers that went unsold.
The newsboys' situation was made even worse when Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst, two real-life newspaper tycoons, rose the distribution costs one cent per every ten papers. While this doesn't seem like a lot, the newsboy was usually exceptionally poor and could not afford to pay this. This inspired the newsboys to band together and form a union to fight back against the newspaper company owners. Movie lover's will need to watch the film themselves to find out how the movie ends. There are no movie spoilers in this review article.
Stars
Looking at the cast of Newsies, many famous names stand out. Some older actors, including Bill Pullman and Robert Duvall had significant roles in the film. However, since the film revolved around the lives of young newspaper boys, most of the actors were significantly younger.
Several young actors played the newspaper boys who went on strike. However, not many of them went on to have memorable careers. However, Newsies was one of Christian Bale's first big roles. Before playing Jack Kelly in this film, he had mostly had bit parts in television shows and movies. In Newsies, he played one of the main characters, who acted much like a cowboy. Working with Dinsey on Newsies helped to open many doors for him in his career. Nowadays, he is best known for his roles in American Psycho and in one of the Batman trilogies.
Music and Choreography
Two Disney legends, Alan Menken and Kenny Ortega created the music and dance moves in this movie. Ortega has worked with Disney for decades on their musicals. He is probably most famous for his role in creating the choreography for the High School Musical series. One thing that set the dances apart from other musicals was Ortega's use of a step ladder and stairs. These would also be used in live theatrical performances. The ladders and stairs are more noticeable in the theatrical version than in the film version. This does not take away from the overall dance moves.
Alan Menken has made most of his fame in composing music for different Disney movies, including The Little Mermaid, Pocahontas, and Tangled. When writing the music for Newsies, he had to think of what the solution selling newsboy lives were like in the late 1800s, when the film takes place. Because of this, the music has some turn-of-the-century elements that many of Menken's other compositions do not have.
Awards
Unfortunately, the 1992 movie version of Newsies only won one award, The Razzie Award for Worst Original Song for "High Times, Hard Times." The film was also nominated for other Razzies and joke awards.
Luckily, the Original Broadway productions of Newsies did much better. In 2012, Christopher Gattelli won the Tony Award for Best Choreography; Alan Menken and Jack Feldman won Best Original Score at the Tony Awards as well. Also in 2012, Christopher Gattelli won the Outstanding Choreography award and Alan Menken won the Outstanding Music Award at the Drama Desk Awards.
The Newsies 1992 movie may not have been highly received when it first came out, but it went on to become a cult classic. Without this film, the more successful live-action theatrical performances would not have been possible.

Casually so, I kind of spell out my story from country kid movie fan to school teacher to amateur blogger to Rotten Tomatoes approval. I greatly appreciate that chance to chat and share. Like most other industries, film and television were highly affected by quarantine. Fortunately, creatives in Hollywood managed to keep releases coming. Audiences were still able to delight in new offerings, despite the necessary delays and changes. So, if you're wondering how this happened, here are three ways Hollywood adapted to quarantine.
1. Streaming Became the New Normal
When quarantine hit, live entertainment was one of the most affected industries. After all, sitting next to strangers wasn't exactly safe. Movie theaters, most of which couldn't change the seating arrangements, were particularly affected. Because of this, releasing movies in theaters was no longer profitable. So, streaming became the new normal. Several platforms began streaming new releases for a certain fee. One of the first platforms to do this was Disney+. This site began allowing viewers to see new films after joining another membership. Unfortunately, this caused problems with actors who lost money in the process. This resulted in a highly publicized lawsuit involving Scarlet Johannsen. Another platform that participated in this was HBO Max. Many new releases were available to watch with an HBO Max subscription. Unfortunately for post-production companies, this wasn't exactly easy. Everything, from editing to releasing, had to be done online. Fortunately, most were able to use services like cloud monitoring to release films. While this caused delays, it allowed audiences to continue enjoying new projects.
2. Projects Were Delayed
Unfortunately for lovers of film and TV everywhere, the pandemic delayed a lot of projects. Many of these were highly anticipated releases that had already started filming. While this was devastating for many people, it was made less difficult by some interesting release strategies. One particularly well-known example of this is Lucifer. This show, which depicts the devil solving crimes in Los Angeles, had planned to release a fifth season during the pandemic. So, when quarantine forced filming to stop, fans prepared for a long wait. Fortunately, most of the season had already been filmed. Because of this, the first half was released during quarantine. This kept fans sated while everyone remained safe. It's also important to remember that Hollywood is still catching up. Films like The Batman, Death on the Nile and West Side Story, all of which were released post-quarantine, were delayed several months to a year. While this can be difficult for fans to endure, it's reassuring to know that Hollywood is hard at work. Sure, waits will be longer. However, movies are still being made.
3. Directors Got Creative
For some Hollywood producers, waiting at home wasn't an option. Of course, filming something during quarantine was extremely dangerous. So, the directors that had to keep going got creative. Soap operas during the time are a great example of this. If you watch some of the quarantine-era soap operas, you'll see a lot of scenes with actors standing far apart. Unfortunately, since soap operas generally involve love scenes, this made some segments undeniably awkward. Some directors tried to fix this awkwardness by using props. For instance, the Pushing Daisies-signature of kissing through plastic became fairly popular. In one especially funny example, a woman had an intimate conversation with what was obviously a dummy. Sure, the more high-profile TV shows and movies couldn't do this. However, there are clear signs of quarantine-era filming in current projects. Many films and shows have scenes where characters are far apart. While this is generally explained away by the plot, it's pretty clear that the space is mandatory.
The pandemic brought many changes, several of which don't seem to be going away. So, it may be time to embrace streaming and other quarantine-based policies.
