What Comes Next for Movie Streaming?
It came as a bit of a surprise to some at the end of 2020 when Warner Bros announced their partnership with HBO Max to deliver the latest big box office releases directly to their online streaming platform as well as seeing cinema release and the first of the big studios to really make the change, but as all facets of entertainment move away from traditional physical locations and more toward online options like casinos here at casinogenie.org or even lately for music festivals as some were forced to offer virtual options this past year. As the change has been deemed a huge success as subscriber numbers have seen a sharp increase though, what comes next for movie streaming, and is the future still rooted in an online presence?
More studios to make the change
For now there are only a small handful of studios that have made the shift, with Warner Bros being one and Disney being the other, although some like Universal have dipped their proverbial toe in the waters with a couple of digital releases too. Given the successes that Warner Bros have shown, however, one of the next big steps will be for other studios to jump onboard with their own partnerships or even launching their own platform to see if they’re able to replicate similar success. No studios have announced this just yet, but as the year comes closer to rounding out, the possibility that many will only goes up over time.
The “Premiere” access approach
Disney have done things in a bit of a different way, for their newest animated releases they have all been placed as a premiere release on their streaming platform meaning viewers would have to pay a fee to gain access to this title – much like a cinema ticket although you get permanent access to it early on. It was met with criticism at first but seems to have settled down, and given how well it has worked for Disney, it may be the route other studios decide to go, you pay for earlier permanent access to watch, before it unlocks further down the line for everyone else.
Opportunities for the likes of Netflix to keep growing
With Netflix committing to seventy unique title releases this year, it’s a huge undertaking, but the streaming giant has been known to churn out a huge number of releases and managing to sign some huge stars whilst doing so too – whilst similar numbers certainly won’t be on the horizon, there is the opportunity for platforms like Netflix to keep filling this gap left behind by the big studios and continue to see huge growth as they churn out some great titles, and with easy accessibility it is something that’s been leaving major studios behind a little – will it be enough? Time will tell.
