6 Movies That Had the Best Negotiators

6 Movies That Had the Best Negotiators

by Lewis Robinson

Becoming a master at negotiation is a challenging and confusing journey. To be a great negotiator, one must remain calm, collected, and confident during the trial. This can prove challenging, but a few famous movies out there give a great example of great negotiators.

In these movies, many actors most likely underwent negotation training to portray these scenes properly. This is vital because watching negotiations through films can be a major help for those who need more information while also being entertained.

A Hijacking

Released in 2013, A Hijacking is centered around the kidnap and attempted release of a Danish freighter and crew. The movie is focused on the negotiations between the CEO of the shipping company and the translator for the Somali pirates. In the film, the negotiations last for 120 days.

Many things can be learned since this is a prime negotiation movie where there are many lives at stake. Everyone is determined to achieve their goals during these scenes, and the film has numerous negotiation styles.

 Lincoln

The movie, Lincoln, released in 2012, follows the 16th President and his negotiation skills as he crushes adversities while trying to get the Congressional majority to vote against slavery. If you are familiar with history, then you will know he succeeded in the end, even with the strong opposition he faced.

Lincoln's negotiation tactics changed throughout this film to adapt to the current situation. There are times he persuades people through storytelling and metaphor, and others when he uses logic and reason.

The Godfather

The Godfather is a Francis Ford Coppola's masterpiece, and anyone who wants to become a master in negotiation should watch. The characters are presented exceptionally well, and all the negotiation scenes are done powerfully. The men who are considered the most powerful in this movie are not the ones who are the most physically strong but instead are the ones who think ahead and have effective negotiation skills.

From the start of the movie to the end, this movie is dripping with negotiations and is a great option to watch if you are looking to see more hardball negotiations.

Thirteen Days

Released in 2000, Thirteen Days is a re-telling of the Cuban Missile Crisis and is told through the viewpoint of Kenny O'Donnell, who was President Kennedy's special adviser during that time. Throughout this film, it is a race against time, and there are some powerful negotiation scenes that ultimately save the world from a potential nuclear holocaust.

This film also shows a variety of negotiation styles, such as contentious to compromising to collaborative. In the movie, the Kennedy brothers are master negotiators who unlock solutions others may see as impossible.

The Founder

A film that depicts Ray Kroc's rise to power, The Founder, released in 2017, shows how he transformed a small drive-in restaurant in Saint Bernardino, California, into one of the largest fast-food franchises in the world. This film focuses on business relationships, avarice, and capitalism.

This movie depicts how Ray Kroc negotiated his way to eventually ousting the original owners of McDonald's. Throughout the film, we see how poor communication destroys the trust between the two partners.

Tommy Boy

A comedy film that also has good examples of negotiation is Tommy Boy. Some may find it surprising, but this movie does show some fun bits of negotiation tactics amidst the humor. It is a good representation of the heart during negotiation. It gives a great example of showing concessions and having humanity and confidence in the midst of trying to make a deal.

Those looking into becoming a negotiator will want to watch any of these films to get a variety of representations of the best negotiators.

MOVIE REVIEW: Space Oddity

Images courtesy of Samuel Goldwyn Films

SPACE ODDITY– 2 STARS

At many points in the first half of Space Oddity– the feature film directorial debut of Emmy-winning actress Kyra Sedgwick– the main character Alex McCalister recites the same sequence of bullet points for his upcoming future to anyone– young or old– who will listen. Alex outlines a love for astronomy that has carried him through his self-regulated training routines to become an astronaut set to colonize the planet Mars. His little verbal mission statement always ends unflinchingly with “Mars is where I’ll die.”

All at once, this introductory mindset of dedication and gallows humor is both plucky and fatalistic. Exposing both curiosity and anxiety, Space Oddity inelegantly wrestles with those two prevailing traits. The realistic science fiction of its premise and the sunny gaze of the Rhode Island setting swirl up the whimsy. Lo and behold, we find out that quaintness has a limit when it comes to fulfilling the human condition.

LESSON #1: HAVING A PURPOSE– Played with an ever-present wide-eyed gaze by Kyle Allen of The Map of Tiny Perfect Things, Alex McCalister has been recruited by the privately-funded Mission Mars project, making him the talk of this small town. With his rehearsed sound bites and fitness rituals, Alex is heartset on this trip with every decision, action, and emotion. He sees this as his chance to have a valuable purpose in life and silence the naysayers. To those folks, Alex’s response flexes the history of ingenuity to say “Everything we know was once an insane idea.”

The doubts about Alex begin with his very own family. His PR-minded sister Liz (Madeline Brewer, lightening up from The Handmaid’s Tale) always seems flabbergasted, while his mother Jane (True Blood’s Carrie Preston) puts on a supportive smile and chants what encouragement she can muster. His father Jeff, played by Kevin Bacon, however, meets his enterprising son with silence. All of them, Alex included, are still reeling years after the car accident death of their older brother and first son.

Levity arrives when Alex’s departure checklist necessitates he get a life insurance policy. The local agency assigns his case to Daisy Taylor, played by the sparkling Alexandra Shipp of Endless and two X-Men films. She becomes an immediate sounding board and the two hit it off with a peachy romance.

Kyle Allen and Alexandra Shipp display winning chemistry throughout their shared scenes in Space Oddity. Their Meet Cute evolves quite quickly into idyllic quality time. While more than plenty sweet, the saccharine level reaches a wise limit when it needs to settle down with maturity. Debuting feature screenwriter Rebecca Banner astutely posits Daisy as the emotionally superior individual and not just an object of desire, giving the core relationship depth beyond dreamy dates. Still, the presence of Daisy adds an anchoring wrinkle for Alex.

LESSON #2: HOW COULD YOU THINK OF GIVING ALL THIS UP?-- Forty-two minutes into Space Oddity, this proverbial question comes up. If Alex goes through with his big plan, he not only has to part with Daisy, but he also stands to leave behind the family gardening and floral business. The dichotomy of Alex seeking to do something futuristic versus the primordial farming cultivated by his father are not lost on the viewer. For the life of him, Jeff cannot grasp his son’s conviction to volunteer for a life-terminating one-way trip and refuse something he sees as vital and rooted. Bacon lifts the drama well without pushing too hard or too deep.

LESSON #3: DELUSIONS, DISTRACTIONS, AND DREAMSSpace Oddity reaches a point where Alex, for all his gumption, is increasingly challenged by more supporting characters about the veracity of Mission Mars and bolting for the cosmos. One catalyst and supportive detractor in this re-examination is the town doctor, played by the immensely over-qualified Alfre Woodard. Evaluating Alex mentally more than physically, the path is set out for Alex to address the true finality of his quest and the underlying grim realities percolating in his life.

This potential swerve waiting to happen in Space Oddity both helps and hurts the overall movie. On one hand, any negative revelations would shatter the adventurous spirit that overflows so much of the draw. On the other hand, there is substantial heart and healing to be found if this character’s feet stay on the ground. Banner and Sedgwick dangle and then decidedly choose a bumpy climactic path, putting us right back to curiosity versus anxiety. Correcting either for a wayward soul or two exceeds this movie’s reach.

MOVIE REVIEW: Tetris

Images courtesy of Apple

TETRIS– 4 STARS

Early on in Tetris, Taron Egerton’s main character Henk Rogers shares an admission with his furious boss about why he put himself into greater financial debt to back an unknown video game from The Soviet Union he stumbled upon at a consumer electronics show in Las Vegas. Leaning over and speaking low with clear eyes relaying bewilderment, he talks about seeing those soon-to-be iconic blocks still falling in his dreams hours and days after playing the game. Memories fill Tetris viewers, and they immediately picture the exact same thing.

LESSON #1: THE ADDICTIVE DRAW OF TETRIS– It doesn’t matter if you’re an OG that played the game on an ancient PC, a Nintendo console, and GameBoy or a young whippersnapper playing it on your phone now. One could argue that, next to Pac-Man, no classic video game has ever been more addictive for all ages than Tetris. The game itself is simple, special, and hypnotic. The giddiness to play Tetris has not faded a kilobyte with age.

Folks, in that very moment the blocks start falling in your head, the film hooks you the same way the game did whenever you first encountered it. For Jon S. Baird’s film to even dip a toe or two beyond the gaming screens into how the legendary video game came to be coveted, leverages that addiction and giddiness in film form. Like the game itself, Tetris’s own narrative blocks of stakes stack precariously higher and the noise it makes gets louder and faster in tempo.

After an opening narration goes thankfully away, the movie follows Egerton’s Tokyo-based Rogers of the small fry Bulletproof Software after he nabbed Japanese PC and video game console rights for Tetris in Vegas. The original arcade rights appear to be controlled by Robert Stein (Toby Jones, remarkably nebbish and cutthroat at the same time). He has been the one person to successfully do business with the government-controlled Elorg organization in Moscow that monopolized all domestic computer hardware and software and employed Tetris creator Alexey Pajitnov (Nikita Yefremov of Londongrad).

With the buzz of Tetris swelling in the burgeoning gamer scene, Henk risks all his available collateral and enters a contentious Iron Curtain bidding war. Henk’s chief opposition are Stein’s partners, the father-son duo of Robert and Kevin Maxwell (award-winning thespians Roger Allam and Anthony Boyle, respectively) of the Mirror Group media empire, who flaunt clout extending all the way to Mikhail Gorbechev. Meanwhile, Rogers ingratiates himself with both Alexey and the representatives from Nintendo. Minoru Arakawa (Ken Yamamura of The Wolverine) and Howard Lincoln (Andor’s Ben Miles) are sitting on the next big thing: Game Boy, meaning the handheld rights are the newest lucrative target held by Elorg.

LESSON #2: WHO’S PLAYING WHO?-- From there, Filth and Stan & Ollie director Jon S. Baird squeezes every drop of potential intrigue from the business gamesmanship laid out in Noah Pink’s debut feature screenplay. On paper, whirring fax machines and cocksure sales pitches shouldn’t be exciting. Yet, the overbearing and manipulative Soviet setting makes all the difference. The duplicitous industrialists and government stooges with fingers in the multi-million-dollar pie in Tetris turn every meeting into a dangerous confrontation with international risks.

LESSON #3: PARTNERS ARE WHAT MAKES US GREAT– The villainous outside government influences may sound ominous, but the core of the multi-layered economic duel in Tetris comes down to character. While money is still the chief motivator for the bereft communist country, the Russian higher-ups and, of course Alexey Pajitnov himself, are attempting to find a partner that is the best fit to be the steward of this special intellectual property. Kept promises need to be thicker than wallets and checkbooks to weed out the selfish profiteering cheaters in the mix. Through it all, Tetris genuflects to the notion that “good ideas have no borders.”

The international casting is stellar across the board. Led by Oleg Stefan’s wonderfully slick Elorg administrator and prodded further by Igor Grabuzov’s political bully, Tetris has a dynamite middle sequence where the negotiating Russians play “Musical Boardrooms” on the foreign suitors. Each eager party– not realizing their competitors are there at the same time mere doors and hallways apart– shoots their clip of pissing contest offers only to receive varying levels of cold shoulders, harmful threats, and deceitful tactics in return. A different movie would pile everyone in one room for a bombastic display of bluster and shouting. Instead, the sharp editing and dramatic irony creates a snappy flow of competition made more clever by shrewd acting.

Tetris marks its unquestioned hero right from the start. Taron Egerton’s Henk wears the “dumb, but honest” assumption like a badge of honor in a very entertaining performance. The only trait he proudly wears harder is the Rocketman actor’s put-upon ‘stache. Egerton’s every persuasive line comes from an embouchure of clenched jaws, scrunched cheeks, and pushed lips doing everything they can to flex facial hair like an Olympic barbell. Boy, does it ever work for him.

Egerton’s charm turns what could have been a semi-lame biopic into an R-rated, borderline caper film of corporate espionage circling dire Cold War consequences. The peppy tone and style of Tetris flirts with the energy of peak 1990s/2000s Steven Soderbergh. Composer Lorne Balfe’s musical score rattles the heightened suspense with playful riffs peppered along the way. With a wink and a smile, Baird and his team also use a heaping scoop of 8-bit graphic VFX for character introductions, chapter transitions, and establishing shots for the jet-set scene changes. By the time Tetris reaches a climactic car chase set to Bonnie Tyler’s “Holding Out For a Hero” sung in the host country’s language, the fun factor is strong and, dare I say it, addicting.

The Rise and Decline of CGI in Today’s Cinema

Image: https://ift.tt/xhEqrky

The Rise and Decline of CGI in Today’s Cinema

by Kevin Gardner

From the black holes in Alien to the explosions in Star Wars to the spectacular landscapes in Avatar, CGI plays a pivotal role in cinema. Computer-generated imagery, or CGI, has become a staple in modern cinema, creating spectacular visuals that would have been impossible to achieve with traditional filmmaking techniques. After all, no one can film on Mars, but with CGI, we can create a realistic Martian landscape that brings a story to life. But like any technology, CGI has had its uses and its challenges, which is why there’s been both a rise and a decline in the film industry that has shaped the way we see movies today. Let’s take a look at the rise of CGI, its uses, and its challenges.

Beginnings of CGI

Let’s start with the beginning of CGI. CGI got its start in 1958 with Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo. It was used in beginning credits for a few decades before its big spike. The rise of CGI in cinema can be traced back to the 1990s, with the release of films like Jurassic Park and Terminator 2: Judgment Day. These films showcased the potential of computer-generated effects, the magic they can produce,  allowing filmmakers to create realistic dinosaurs and cyborgs on screen. The success of these movies paved the way for the use of CGI in a variety of genres, from action films like The Matrix to animated features like Toy Story.

With the advancement of technology, CGI became more sophisticated, allowing for even more impressive visuals. The Lord of the Rings trilogy, released in the early 2000s, used groundbreaking CGI to bring Middle-Earth to life with magical creatures at every turn. In 2009, Avatar utilized motion capture technology to create realistic alien creatures. These films set a new standard for visual effects, pushing the boundaries of what was possible on screen. This was the rise of CGI.

Criticisms of CGI

But with the rise of CGI came a backlash from some film critics and audiences. As more and more movies relied heavily on CGI, some argued that it was taking away from the storytelling and emotional impact of films. The overuse of CGI in films like the Star Wars prequels and Transformers series was criticized for prioritizing spectacle over substance. Essentially, the power of CGI was being used to try and compensate for a lack of great storytelling, which caused some backlash against CGI at all.

The criticism of CGI isn’t the only challenge. The high cost of CGI was a concern for many filmmakers. While some big-budget films could afford to spend millions on visual effects, smaller indie films were left struggling to compete. This led some to argue that CGI was contributing to the homogenization of cinema, with only big-budget films able to afford the most impressive visuals.

Because of both of these challenges, there has been a shift in recent years towards more practical effects in filmmaking. Movies like Mad Max: Fury Road and The Revenant have received critical acclaim for their use of practical effects and stunts, rather than relying on CGI. This trend has been seen as a return to traditional filmmaking techniques and a way to create a more visceral and authentic viewing experience. That has led to the decline of CGI in films.

However, CGI is far from dead in cinema. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has relied heavily on CGI to create its larger-than-life superheroes and intergalactic worlds, while movies like The Lion King and The Jungle Book have used CGI to create photorealistic versions of beloved animated classics. Additionally, the COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the use of CGI in filmmaking, as social distancing restrictions have made traditional filmmaking methods more challenging. So while there has been a decline in CGI, it’s still here to stay—for now.

The Future of CGI

So, what does the future hold for CGI in cinema? It's likely that we'll continue to see a mix of practical effects and CGI in films, with filmmakers using whichever method best suits their storytelling needs. However, the new age of CGI seems to strive for balance: a shift towards more subtle use of CGI, with filmmakers using it to enhance practical effects rather than replacing them entirely.

The rise and decline of CGI in cinema has been a reflection of the changing technology and cultural attitudes towards filmmaking. While there have been criticisms of its overuse and cost, there's no denying that CGI has allowed filmmakers to create truly stunning visuals on screen. But what is CGI doing to films? That’s the question asked in the pop culture podcast “Too Much CGI” where they provide a deep dive into CGI.

Last Thoughts

Overall, the impact of CGI on cinema has been immense, transforming the way films are made and viewed. Whether we love it or hate it, CGI has become an integral part of the film industry, and its influence is sure to be felt for years to come.

Easy Mistakes to Make When Taking Your Commercial Headshots

Image: https://ift.tt/JPzGm35

Easy Mistakes to Make When Taking Your Commercial Headshots

Commercial headshots by a professional headshot photographer are important for helping you stand out from the crowd when applying for commercial acting work. Whether you’re applying for radio commercials, television commercials, or other advertising roles, you want your commercial headshot to be at the top of a director’s pile. However, even when you hire a photographer to assist with your shots, it’s easy to make some of the following mistakes.

Choosing the Wrong Photographer

In most situations, commercial headshots are necessary for you to be considered for various commercial acting jobs. Casting directors, agents, and managers want to know who you are without meeting you first, and your pictures can often make or break your job opportunities. Hiring the wrong photographer to take your headshots might result in you not landing the jobs you hoped for. Someone calling themselves a commercial headshot photographer doesn’t mean they will be good at what they do or right for you.

Rather than hiring the first photographer you encounter or the most affordable one you can find, take a moment to learn more about them. Check out their past work, talk to people who have utilized their services before, and meet with them for an introductory session to see if you work well with them as a person.

Not all photographers gel with all clients and relationships can matter when you want natural, professional, and high-quality headshots to be noticed by a director or producer. Don’t be afraid to meet with multiple photographers before choosing one you believe produces the type of headshot photos you’re looking for.

Not Knowing What You’re Looking for

Many headshot photographers know how to take excellent photos but need direction. They need to know who you are, what you’re trying to sell, and the jobs you’re trying to land with your commercial headshots. While there’s nothing wrong with ‘general’ headshots for jobs that don’t quite fit into one category, having some that accurately reflect the job you’re applying for is crucial.

Consider the jobs you’ll apply for and communicate your needs to the photographer. For example, you might require a serious expression for an ad on a serious topic or a laughing photo for a humorous job opportunity. Having a range of options might improve your chances of being considered for your dream roles.

Choosing Your Own Headshots

Out of the hundreds of photos your photographer might have taken during your photo shoot, you’ll likely have an idea of the ones you like the most. It’s easy to believe that the photos showing you in your best light are the ‘winners’ you’ll send to casting directors, but they aren’t necessarily the photos they want to see.

Rather than picking your own headshots, ask someone with an objective eye to assist. Your photographer or an industry expert might know the features that make a photo stand out from hundreds of other headshots.

Wearing the Wrong Clothing

You might not think your clothing matters when meeting with a photographer for headshot photos rather than body shots. While it’s true that your lower body won’t be in the pictures, there’s still room to make mistakes with the clothes and accessories you wear on the upper half of your body.

Avoid wearing patterns that distract the eye, such as stripes, spots, and waves. Logos can also be distracting, even if they’re only small or embroidered on a pocket. While photographers can touch up photos to remove logos, this can come at an added cost.

Opt for a minimalist look to keep the focus on you rather than what you’re wearing. Accessories like hats, scarves, earrings, and necklaces can draw the eye for all the wrong reasons. Many photographers also recommend avoiding loose-fitting attire, sleeveless tops that draw the eye to the skin, and shiny clothing that can be distracting.

Going Overboard With Makeup

You want to look your best for headshots, but that doesn’t necessarily mean spending hours in front of a mirror doing your makeup. You might make the mistake of having too much of a good thing and removing the focus from who you are as a person.

Rather than getting a spray tan or spending days at the beach to make yourself appear more tanned, ask your photographer to warm your photos. You can have more control over your skin tone evenness and avoid it being a distraction.

It’s also a good idea to avoid any significant beauty or grooming services the day before or the day of your appointment. Some services, like waxing, can result in redness, which can stand out in photos for all the wrong reasons. Keep your makeup plain and simple, and avoid any changes to your hair, body, or skin you might regret later. The more natural you look, the more timeless your photos might be and the fewer distractions there can be.

You might think that all photos a professional headshot photographer takes will be perfect for your needs, but that’s not always the case. The photographer you choose, the clothing and makeup you wear, and even the poses you use might all play a part in whether you’re considered for a role.

Kim Kardashian first gained public attention in the early 2000s as a stylist and personal shopper for various celebrities, including Paris Hilton. MOVIE REVIEW: Infinite Sea

Images courtesy of Buffalo 8

INFINITE SEA (MAR INFINITO)-- 2 STARS

Within the history of space exploration movies big and small, the dangerous uncertainty of such journeys has created the steady narrative of examining human separation. Dramatic quandaries have been presented that outline what an astronaut is leaving behind and, more pressingly, their level of sacrificial willingness to do so. There’s almost always a list of people, things, and places. Films love to parade their departing characters through those nostalgic hooks. In the striking Portuguese film Mar Infinito, or Infinite Sea stateside, the list is only one thing.

The Porto city resident Miguel (Ben Bom’s Nuno Nolasco) dreams of crossing the galaxy in the not-too-distant future. The majority of Earth has become a dying wasteland and colonizing missions are society’s escape from slow decay. Local rockets of the International Space Agency launch several times a week to planets within the solar system of Proxima Centauri. The ISA’s billboard, television, and radio promotions are inescapable in the depopulated urban scene. Miguel is so desperate for that renewing experience, he’s holed himself up in his loft apartment trying to hack into the registration system to correct his denied application and circumvent the process.

What has kept Miguel out of the ISA is a documented phobia of water. A few times a week, Miguel leaves his apartment and ventures to a local pool to try his hand at floating and treading water to break his weakness. During these visits, he meets and befriends the lithe and capable swimmer Eva (Maria Leite of The Translators). The two form an instant and beneficial attraction. She helps him conquer his aquatic fear, and he teaches her how to ride a bike. More importantly, Eva now bears witness to his isolated fixation to leave the planet.

LESSON #1: FACTORS THAT CHANGE YOUR SENSE OF PURPOSE-- As you might ascertain, Eva is the one thing on Infinite Sea’s list of earthly emotional anchors for its protagonist. The smitten couple and their loner psyches melt into each other as shared time increases. They fathom the notion of Miguel finding an alternate universe out in Proxima Centuari and whether or not their proxies would still meet each other and bond. Similar to “open your eyes” in 1997’s Abre los Ojos (and later its ambitious American remake Vanilla Sky five years later), the longing wish from Eva calls upon the film’s title and becomes “find me on the other side of the infinite sea.” Even without words, Infinite Sea has beauty to behold.

LESSON #2: ELEMENTS THAT LOOK INFINITE– Following the heady existentialism of Infinite Sea, the list of things that appear endless are: space, the sea, and love. Director Carlos Amaral– making his feature debut from short films– and cinematographer Jorge Quintela (Mabata Bata) go to great visual lengths to create those parallels cinematically. Below water, the camera captures our two human figures frequently floating within the slowly swirling gyre of backlit water particles. In a similar fashion and speed, spacecraft streak across starry skies and higher heavens.

The feelings of expansiveness are wholly present, and occasionally backed by a slight score from Miguel Santos following Amaral from shorts with his feature debut as well. Powered by those layers of imagery and tone, there was, conceptually, a tremendous potential for a powerful romantic pull with Infinite Sea. Once Miguel succeeds in arriving at his otherworldly destination, wide vistas of desolate marshland (shot in the coastal lagoons near Aveiro, Portugal) expand the scope of long-distance love further.

LESSON #3: HOW DO YOU TAKE SOMEONE WITH YOU?-- Amaral re-creates Eva as a figment of Miguel’s imagination at the failing colony camp. Filling his heart and mind, she appears on-screen in times of despair to embrace him and whispering soothing encouragement in his ear. In these segments of her ethereal performance, Maria Leite is doing her part to create swell in Infinite Sea as that factor of Lesson #1 that cannot be repressed.

Too often, however, Nuno Nolasco displays dreadfully muted emotions in return, not unlike Santos’ miniscule score. The narrated internal monologues given to him by Amaral’s script try to speak for his blank exterior, but the pulse rate of Infinite Sea never quickens. Not enough significant passion ever overflows from that mustached shell to turn Leite’s swell into a unified surge of compelling sweep.

In a scant 76 minutes, Infinite Sea bravely approaches contemplative science fiction with a tiny budget for VFX (also managed by Aramal himself) and an aim for abstract and cognitive obstacles of the human condition. Much can be complimented in those crisply stylish attempts at big ideas and even bigger questions. Yet, it is hard to fathom the so-called infinite as having something missing, but a penetrative punch is absent. The bridled chemistry of the leads is what you will put your finger on to blame. Add fifteen minutes and let a few white dwarf stars go supernova for a bit.

From Gore to Suspense: The Evolution of Horror Films from the 80s to the 2020s

From Gore to Suspense: The Evolution of Horror Films from the 80s to the 2020s

Horror movies have captivated audiences for generations, thrilling and terrifying viewers with a seemingly endless array of subgenres and styles. However, one of the most noticeable changes in horror films has been the gradual but unmistakable shift in tone and style that has occurred between the 1980s and the present day. As we explore these differences in greater detail, we can better appreciate the evolution of the horror genre and the impact it has had on both audiences and filmmakers alike. If you’d like to take a break from TonyBet CA, try giving horror movies a shot.

The Violence

One of the most striking differences between 80s horror movies and 2020s horror movies is the level of violence and gore. In the 80s, horror films were known for their graphic violence and gore. Movies like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and A Nightmare on Elm Street were notorious for their brutal killings and gore-filled scenes. These films were often criticized for their explicit content, with many people arguing that they were too violent and disturbing.

In contrast, 2020s horror movies tend to be less focused on graphic violence and gore. While there are still plenty of violent horror films being made, many recent movies have shifted towards psychological horror and suspense. These films rely less on shock value and more on tension and atmosphere to create a sense of unease in the viewer.

The Special Effects

Another major difference between 80s horror movies and 2020s horror movies is the use of special effects. In the 80s, practical effects were the norm, with filmmakers using makeup and prosthetics to create their monsters and villains. This led to some truly iconic horror creatures, such as Freddy Krueger and the Xenomorph from Alien.

Today, however, many filmmakers are opting for CGI to create their monsters and special effects. While this allows for more complex and detailed creations, some fans argue that it can take away from the realism and impact of the horror. Additionally, some recent films have been criticized for relying too heavily on CGI, leading to a lack of tension and suspense.

The Message

The themes and messages of horror movies have also evolved over time. In the 80s, horror films often reflected the anxieties and fears of the era. Movies like The Thing and Dawn of the Dead dealt with issues like nuclear war and consumerism, while others explored the psychological toll of trauma and isolation.

In the 2020s, horror movies have continued to reflect the anxieties of the times. However, the issues they explore have shifted to reflect the current cultural climate. Recent films like Get Out and Us have tackled issues of racism and social inequality, while others like The Babadook and Hereditary have focused on mental health and grief.

The Style

Finally, the overall tone and style of horror movies has changed over the years. In the 80s, horror films often had a campy, tongue-in-cheek tone, with movies like Evil Dead and Re-Animator using humor to balance out the violence and gore.

Today, horror films are generally more serious and grounded in reality. Many recent movies aim to create a sense of unease and discomfort through slow-building tension and suspense, rather than relying on jump scares and gore.

Editorial: All Quiet on the Western Front

Image: https://ift.tt/L04mjME

ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT

Everyone knows the famous roman by Erich Maria Remarque all quiet on the western front. It is more than 100 years old and enjoys a huge fan community like Spinia login. But what is the meaning behind this classic?

Teenager Paul Bäumer (Felix Kammerer) and his friends Albert (Aaron Hilmer) and Müller (Moritz Klaus) voluntarily enlist in the German army during World War I and ride a wave of patriotic fervor that quickly dissolves into goodwill. Disillusioned and shocked, they discover that the fight for Germany is not a purely honorable cause at all, but a deadly slaughter. Once the young soldiers face the brutal realities of life on the front lines, death and loss are among the daily horrors. Paul's preconceptions about the enemy, about the right and wrong of the conflict soon collapse like a house of cards. Until the armistice, however, Paul must continue to fight without fulfilling the leading military's desire to end the war with a German offensive. And just when it seems the horror and ordeal has come to an end and the men can go home, General Friedrichs (Devid Striesow) makes a momentous decision. For he cannot simply accept defeat for Germany.

Now - almost 100 years after the novel was published - there is also a German adaptation for the first time. With the Netflix millions behind him, Edward Berger ("Jack") can really get to work on this one. Strongly illustrated and also acoustically impressive, he draws the audience into the midst of senseless dying.

THE INTERNATIONAL HYPE

Edward Berger's "Nothing New in the West" is the first German cinema adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque's novel. The film won four Oscars at last night's Academy Awards ceremony.

"And the Oscar goes to: 'Nothing New in the West'." The film team around director Berger and producer Malte Grunert could hope nine of the awards. The film won four: for Best Cinematography, Best International Film, Best Sound Design and Best Score.

The film is neither an indictment nor a confession. It simply shows the ruthlessness of war, the senselessness of how hundreds of thousands of men are sacrificed here. It is dirty, grimy, brutal, there are hand-to-hand combat scenes that go on for minutes, the blood splatters on the camera and there is mud everywhere.

Berger's film is realistic and doubly frightening given the current developments of the war in Ukraine. Incendiary, Berger says in the interview, "Basically, the story hasn't changed. 100 years ago, young people went to war and were persuaded by demagogues, through propaganda and manipulation, to do so with enthusiasm. It's the same today. It hasn't changed."

How to Hire An Accountant for My Film Company?

by Nancy Fernandez

As a movie company owner, managing finances can be a daunting task. Proper accounting and bookkeeping are essential to ensure the financial success of your business. In this article, we will discuss how to hire an accountant for your film company, including the steps you should take to find the right accountant.

1. Determine Your Accounting Needs

Before you start looking for an accountant, you should determine your accounting needs. This will help you identify the specific accounting services that your film company requires. Some of the services you may require include financial record keeping, financial statement preparation, and tax preparation.

As a movie company owner, you may also require specialized accounting services such as royalty accounting, audit support, and film tax credit consulting. Identifying your accounting needs will help you find an accountant who can provide the services that are essential for your business. You should hire an accountant to avoid accounting mistakes in your movie business.

2. Look for Specialized Accountants

Once you have identified your accounting needs, you should look for an accountant who specializes in the film industry. A specialized accountant will be familiar with the unique financial aspects of the film industry, such as production costs, distribution expenses, and revenue recognition.

Working with a specialized accountant can provide significant benefits to your film company. They can provide valuable insights into the financial management of your business and help you identify ways to save money and increase revenue. They can also help you navigate the complex tax regulations that apply to the film industry.

3. Check Credentials

When looking for an accountant, it is essential to check their credentials. A certified public accountant (CPA) is a professional who has passed the Uniform CPA Exam and has met specific education and experience requirements. Hiring a CPA can provide assurance that your accountant has the knowledge and expertise required to manage your finances effectively.

You may also consider hiring a chartered global management accountant (CGMA). A CGMA is a professional who has earned both the CPA and the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) designation. A CGMA is a highly qualified professional who can provide valuable insights into the financial management of your film company.

4. Consider Experience

Experience is another critical factor to consider when hiring an accountant for your film company. You should look for an accountant who has experience working with film companies. An experienced accountant can provide valuable insights into the specific accounting requirements of the film industry. They can also help you navigate the challenges of financial management in the film industry.

An experienced accountant can provide you with peace of mind knowing that your finances are being managed by someone who understands the unique financial aspects of your business. They can help you identify areas for improvement and implement strategies to increase revenue and reduce costs.

5. Schedule a Consultation

Once you have identified a potential accountant, you should schedule a consultation with them. During the consultation, you can discuss your accounting needs, and the accountant can provide you with information about their services. You can also ask the accountant questions about their experience and qualifications.

A consultation can help you determine if an accountant is a good fit for your film company. It can also give you a chance to evaluate the accountant's communication skills and determine if they are someone you feel comfortable working with.

6. Discuss Fees

Before hiring an accountant, it is essential to discuss fees. Different accountants may use different fee structures, such as hourly rates or flat fees. You should ask the accountant to provide you with an estimate of their fees based on the services you require. You should also discuss how the accountant bills their services. Some accountants bill for their services monthly, while others bill quarterly or annually. You should also ask about their payment terms and whether they require a retainer or deposit before starting work.

7. Review the Contract

Once you have chosen an accountant, you should review the contract carefully before signing it. The contract should outline the services that the accountant will provide and the fees associated with those services. It should also specify the payment.

Key Takeaway:

In conclusion, hiring an accountant for your film company is essential to ensure the financial success of your business. By determining your accounting needs, looking for specialized accountants, checking credentials and experience, scheduling a consultation, discussing fees, and reviewing the contract, you can find the right accountant for your film company.

Working with a specialized accountant who understands the unique financial aspects of the film industry can provide valuable insights and help you navigate the complex tax regulations that apply to the industry. By hiring an accountant, you can have peace of mind knowing that your finances are being managed effectively and efficiently, ultimately contributing to the overall success of your film company.
