MOVIE REVIEW: Linoleum

LINOLEUM– 4 STARS

About halfway through Linoleum, Jim Gaffigan’s main character, a television science show host named Cameron Edwin, takes stock of his life approaching 50-years-old. He verbally shares, “This is not how I thought things would turn out. I wanted to do something fantastic.” His wife Erin, played by Better Call Saul’s Rhea Seehorn, answers, “Fantastic is not that simple,” and lays out her own perspective on their current standing. That adjective is a perfect choice to describe the wide expanse between Linoleum’s capricious microcosm and emotional macrocosm.

LESSON #1: THE RANGE OF EFFECT AND DESCRIPTION FOR “FANTASTIC”-- In most interpretations of “fantastic,” the illustration is of something seen as excellent or very good. The other direction goes towards the vast or enormous. To boot, a character of any sort seeking the fantastic is typically either overreaching or overselling. For a good while, as the word keeps coming up in desirous dialogue written by filmmaker Colin West, Linoleum equates fantastic with irrational. The movie coyly and therapeutically hinges on the bated breath of witnessing grander wish fulfillment that dares to go against logic. 

LESSON #2: IDENTIFYING YOUR UNIQUE PERSPECTIVE– Linoleum sets that attitude brilliantly with its opening voiceover introducing Cameron. The astronomer is describing how the evolving and growing universe can appear out of the black abyss when people look closely. Paraphrasing, Cameron’s monologue discerns further that “what you’re seeing is entirely unique to you” and one’s personal universe. He calls that point-of-view a kind of “fingerprint” of the individual. Matching the spirit of the astronomer who never stopped wanting to be a full-fledged astronaut, that cosmic homily is unmistakably tenderhearted. However, that notion may also define a cloud of malaise and confusion between Cameron and reality. 

As chipper as Cameron tries to be, the proverbial orbiting moons of his life are failing. As described by the resident doctor (Tony Shaloub), Cameron’s senile father (veteran character actor Roger Hendricks Simon) is slipping away at a nursing home, and his youngest son doesn’t talk to him in-between hugs. He and Erin, his former co-star, sleep separately, and she has divorce papers at the ready. Cameron’s boss (TV star Michael Ian Black) has handed his “Above and Beyond” show over to Kent Armstrong, a younger and more successful doppelganger of Cameron (a clever dual role for Gaffigan). To rub it in, Kent and his red Corvette Stingray have moved in across the street to run the bicycler Cameron off the road as well as out of his career in Fairview Heights.

A mechanical epiphany of inspiration presents itself when a large portion of a NASA rocket crashes serendipitously in Cameron’s backyard. Initially prohibited from returning to his home, Cameron gets it in his mind to sneak back, repair the rocket, and become the astronaut he’s always wanted to be. The project attracts the attention of Kent’s wallflower son Marc (Gabriel Rush of Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark), who also takes a friendly liking to Cameron’s teenage daughter Nora (The Walking Dead’s Katelyn Nacon) along the way.

LESSON #3: DETECTING THE ABNORMAL– From imagery of that red ‘Vette falling out of the sky for no one to see but Cameron and the recurring appearances of an elderly woman (Elisabeth Henry) watching from afar, a keen viewer will begin to question Linoleum’s sunny disposition. They may diagnose a mid-life crisis for Cameron’s nuttiness. The narrative of the film divides the characters between those asking what is happening and those who comfortably resign to the fact that sometimes things just happen. Tonally, the score from up-and-coming instrumentalist Mark Hadley (Double Walker) is filled with cues featuring dissipating ending notes that warp the symphony ever so slightly to suggest thematic imperfections. Colin West’s escalating mystery of who or what to believe becomes highly appealing.

The strength of this perceptive and endearing draw comes from Emmy winner Jim Gaffigan. Showcasing chops in a different direction, Linoleum could not be farther from Jim’s slothful and very popular stage act. Pushing those glasses up on his nose and waffling between moods of defeat and hope, Gaffigan offers his best dramatic role to date. He’s never overmatched, especially in poignant scenes shared with Rhea Seehorn as their marriage crumbles further. Modestly for the past decade, films like American Dreamer, Chappaquiddick, Light from Light, and Tesla among others have discovered a second calling for Jim. He is quietly climbing the charts of the best stand-up comedians to become (yes I’ll say it) great actors.

LESSON #4: TURNING THE NOMINAL INTO THE PROFOUND– Without spoiling, Colin West is shrouding a doozy of heart-punch with Linoleum. A surreal swerve in the final third completely upends the entire movie that came before it in the best way. Facets that appeared disconnected or nominal fracture to become new touchstones that are personal and profound. Matching the setting town’s slogan, Linoleum “soars to new heights” without ever leaving the ground. 

Linoleum is a conversation-heavy film unafraid to talk honestly about trajectories and unfulfilled dreams. This multiple award winner from the indie festival circuit joins other small-scale science fiction diamonds-in-the-rough like Clara, I Kill Giants, Wonderstruck, The Time Capsule, and Safety Not Guaranteed that burrow heavy human emotion and the toll of one’s life into a premise floating in the realm of tangible fantasy. More heady and original efforts of this type are sorely needed on screens and streams. By that same token, the “fantastic” is here in Linoleum and it is a heaping dose of cathartic magic that wins you over.

AWARDS: Nominations Announced for the 3rd Annual Critics Choice Super Awards

The Critics Choice Association (CCA) announced today the nominees for the 3rd Annual Critics Choice Super Awards, honoring the most popular, fan-obsessed genres across both television and movies, including Superhero, Science Fiction/Fantasy, Horror, and Action. MOVIE REVIEW: Cocaine Bear

COCAINE BEAR— 3 STARS

I don’t mean to get clinical, but I’m willing to bet there is a tremendous amount of folks who have never tried cocaine, especially before arriving at the multiplex for Cocaine Bear. If you have, awesome. Chalk it up as “to each their own.” The rest of the clean virgins for Florida Snow may watch what transpires with a complete WTF to go with the film’s own strategically-plotted WTF qualities. So, let the school teacher here educate you for a hot second.

LESSON #1: KNOW THE SIGNS OF COCAINE INFLUENCE– To the inexperienced, there is a range of symptoms possible for those under the influence and then, later, overdosing on cocaine. Let’s start on the low end of influence with:

• Euphoria and a sense of confidence

• High levels of energy and little need for sleep or food

• Increased physical and mental sharpness

We’re all Dewey Cox because a good bit of that sounds amazing! Without ingesting a gram of the real Mexican Percocet, Cocaine Bear will forcefully stimulate each of those buzzy symptoms in its audience. This madcap movie from director Elizabeth Banks operates with a constant herky-jerky energy between humor and horror that slaps a skeleton of funny bones, rapid blood vessels, and other delicate nether regions of weakened constitution.

Taking steep and murderous liberties with an outlandish true story, Cocaine Bear turns back the clock to 1985 when “War on Drugs” PSAs molded every possible taboo fear for the American public. After drug dealer pilot Andrew C. Thornton II (The Americans Emmy winner Matthew Rhys) plummets to his death after unloading $14 million worth of cocaine from a plane over the Georgian woods, the one creature to find the wrapped and bagged Zip is a female black bear in the Blood Mountain (how appropriate) region of the Chattahoochee National Recreation Area.

The southern bruin didn’t just lick a little smidge of Blow and get nutty. It ingested 75 pounds of Love Affair. Yes, 75! The real bear died of a heart attack with only a few grams making it into her bloodstream before becoming a taxidermy display. Cocaine Bear discards that medical result and showpiece fate and makes sure to tell as tall a tall-tale as possible. The movie is ridiculously, without shame, here to embellish the f–k out of every possible height.

LESSON #2: KNOW THE SIGNS OF COCAINE OVERDOSE–  Since we’re talking about 75 pounds of the Big C, our Cocaine Bear has leaped into overdose and toxicity territory. The mental and physical challenges become much worse and morph into:

• Chest and stomach pain, changes to heart rhythm, and rapid breathing

• Dangerous increase in body temperature

• Nausea, convulsions, and vomiting

• Twitching, paranoia, confusion, high anxiety, restlessness, panic and sudden mood changes

• Aggression, agitation, and violence

Cocaine toxicity’s endgame dials up heart attacks, strokes, seizens, oxygen deprivation, coma, and death. Now, the movie Cocaine Bear won’t kill you, but it’s confidently willing to wager that its grandiose gore and stalking terror might just trigger a few of those next-level symptoms in its audience. They gambled correctly. 

The plane crash and the media frenzy surrounding it kicks off a scramble between colorful characters of law enforcement and the criminal underworld descending on Chattahoochee country to recover the duffel bags carrying a small fortune of valuable product. The most desperate party is a pair of drug-dealing underlings, Daveed and Eddie (O’Shea Jackson of Straight Outta Compton and Solo’s Alden Ehrenreich), working for the late Ray Liotta’s St. Louis kingpin Syd. Hot on their trail is comedy treasure Isiah Whitlock Jr.’s Detective Bob and his younger partner Reba (Ayoola Smart from Killing Eve).

The arrival of these out-of-towners– and the marauding mammal herself– catches the unknowing local residents and community members in this escalating hunt. Chief among them is a single mother nurse named Sari (the top-billed Keri Russell, Rhys’s The Americans co-star) trying to track down her rebellious pre-teen daughter Dee Dee (The Florida Project’s Brooklynn Prince) and her dopey best friend Henry (Christian Convery of Playing With Fire) after skipping school to hike to some secret waterfall. The local park ranger (character actress supreme Margo Martindale), animal rights activist (Modern Family’s Jesse Tyler Ferguson), and a trio of park-squatting teen delinquents (led by Aaron Holiday of Sharp Objects) also get roped into this pursuit. Hey, the body count of Cocaine Bear has to come from somewhere.

LESSON #3: THROW BEAR SAFETY OUT THE WINDOW– Cocaine Bear’s very first kill ignores the prevailing bear attack strategy rhyme of “If it’s brown lay down. If it’s black, fight back.” Those who cannot run fast enough lose a limb or two, only for the fever of the fresh kill replaced by the distraction of a lovely butterfly tickling the bear’s bloody nose. That’s the kind of hammy movie that awaits you with Cocaine Bear. Science and logic, hilariously cited in the movie with Wikipedia “facts,” are deliberately twisted and disregarded for violent glee as cocaine becomes the bear what spinach was for Popeye.

Former Devo rocker-turned-composer Mark Mothersbaugh (Thor: Ragnarok) finds himself right at home in Cocaine Bear’s aesthetic. He pumps forth a kitchen sink electronica score with keyboard slurs matching the splats of neon and crimson on-screen. Prolific TV stunt coordinator Melissa Stubbs (Altered Carbon) throws this cast around to soil their 80s threads and kick up the chases. Last but not least, and coming a long way from the rubber suits and subpar CGI of yesteryear, the digital bear itself, finished by VFX from Petra Holtorlf-Stratton’s team (Deep Horizon), looks suitably fantastic and terrifying.

Following Beast from last fall from the same Universal Studios, Cocaine Bear joins a mild and greatly appreciated return of sorts for “Creature Features” coming from top-shelf production companies. The horror subgenre has been loved by aficionados like Roger Ebert and others across generations, only to find itself grossly diluted in the last two decades by the edible straight-to-cable garbage like the Sharknado series. It’s wonderful to see a big studio aim higher than low-ball cheese. True to form, the unadulterated humor in this very well-marketed movie is as sharply creative as the vicious kills. Cocaine Bear is just long enough, just dumb enough, and just scary enough to honor the “Creature Feature” label.

Cocaine Bear is not without its buzz-killing shortcomings. Normally the monster is the star of the show, but a great “Creature Feature” can be elevated by an engaging ensemble from the human buffet side. This is not one of those movies. No one, save for the “kids say the darndest things” moments from Prince and Convery maybe, is remotely interesting. 

Alden Ehrenreich and O’Shea Jackson Jr. are an oddly mismatched chatty duo to follow. Keri Russell is buried in mom mode, and Isiah Whitlock Jr. doesn’t have the cardio to be a strapping hero. No matter who Elizabeth Banks could have found from her Hollywood contacts, wishing for compelling personalities equal to the likes of Brody, Hooper, and Quint from Jaws, the Alien crew of the Nostromo, or the Antarctic ball-busters of The Thing was hoping for too much.

LESSON #4: THE LASTING EFFECTS OF COCAINE– The overall filthy, guilty pleasure sustenance of Cocaine Bear circles reflection back again to the effects of the titular drug. Scottie will stay in one’s system for a couple of days and trigger positive urine tests of up to two weeks. Expect this movie to have longer staying power effects with the right crowd that doesn’t need their movies to matter really, really hard all the time. Lastly, unlike opiates, there is no medication that can reverse an overdose of cocaine. That too is a perfectly acceptable cinematic circumstance. Face it. Like Henry says, “we’re cokeheads now.” Go ahead and let this movie mangle you.

MOVIE REVIEW: Creed III

CREED III– 4 STARS

Away from the stadium spectacles that stir the energy in Creed III, there are a pair of parallel scenes, one in the past and another in the present, that typify a level of earnest intelligence above the fiery heart of the film. As kids, a young Adonis “Donnie” Johnson helps his older foster friend Damian Anderson spot the weaknesses in his amateur ring opponents in order to find what they called “checkmate.” Years later, a retired Adonis is now a father trying to school his pre-teen daughter Amara on the finer mental components to fighting. 

LESSON #1: FIGHT WITH STRATEGY– In both scenes, strategy is shown to be at the forefront of confrontation and given value higher than punches and power, creating a little nucleus for the whole movie. Adonis takes time to define the three tenets of timing, focus, and control to Amara. Combine that with the cunning he shares with Damian to turn flaws in strengths and paths are created towards attrition and victory. Those same prime traits of fighting skill speak to Creed III itself. 

With confidence and integrity, Creed III has been created with outright strategy. This third entry has timed its moment to show that it has reached a maturation point to continue forward without Sylvester Stallone. Making his feature debut as a director, franchise star Michael B. Jordan represents and demonstrates a new level of command and authority. Moreover, rather than re-assembling and relying on more family trees, Creed III finds a very penetrating and personal singular focus for its choice of ominous opposition.

That dangerous presence is the now-adult Damian Anderson, played by the white-hot Jonathan Majors. Eighteen years ago, the up-and-coming Golden Glove amateur from the wrong crowd took the fall for assault and gun charges stemming from an altercation with police when Adonis was able to flee. Dame spent that time in prison while Donnie, as we all know, discovered his silver spoon roots, found famous tutelage, and became the best and most revered boxer of his generation, with the Hollywood Hills riches and comforts that came with that success. 

LESSON #2: CHILDHOOD SINS AND SCARS– When the newly-free Dame seeks out Adonis, the two reconnect with visible pain and loss coming in different forms and concentrations. For Adonis, it’s unearthed guilt realizing the blessings of his life would not exist if he shared Dame’s indicted fate. For Damian, it’s a tug-of-war between appreciable respect and simmering resentment towards the windfall and acclaim that could have been his instead. Also not innocent in these old sins is Adonis’s adoptive mother Mary Ann Creed (the radiant Phylicia Rashad) who tried to keep Damian’s bad influences and correspondences away from Donnie.

Adonis is in a key position to help Dame earn the boxing trajectory he lost to incarceration. At the Delphi Boxing Academy he runs with the son of his father’s former trainer, Tony “Little Duke” Evers (a returning Wood Harris from Remember the Titans), Donnie gets Damian a training spot as the sparring partner for Felix Chavez (welterweight boxer José Benavidez Jr.), the fighter Adonis is promoting in an upcoming big money title fight against his old rival Viktor Drago (Florian Munteanu from Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings). As it turns out, Dame’s fighting acumen and mindset is as menacing and reckless as his record, forcing Adonis to address their shared past, tenuous present, and combative potential future.

Creed III stays very tight on the flaws of two proud men hiding shame. As you can imagine, therapy was never an option for either of these characters, and the narrative is not shy about presenting the long-term effects of child abuse even within burly tough guys. This aggressive intimacy allows for two blistering performances from the lead actors.

Plenty of Rocky/Creed enemies for decades have been larger-than-life and mostly-hollow caricatures fleshed out to oversell the usual underdog angle of the series. Instead, Creed III borrows the “sympathetic villain” route common to comic book films and creates a twisted and mirrored equal with Dame Anderson. Through Jonathan Majors and his complete range of exuding complexity and torment– two tonal modes he has become an expert at in a short period of time, Dame’s slow-boiling rancor comes out voraciously with every seething and soulful inhale and exhale from the actor in and out the squared circle. For the second film in a row, Majors is as serious as a heart attack and you can’t take your eyes off of him.

Fill the other side of the life’s shadow boxing mirror, Michael B. Jordan’s title character shields the explosions brewing inside. It’s not as simple as flipping the switch from Retirement Mode to Hero Mode for the living legend. The cerebral healing and preparation is greater than the physical. Johnson’s journey to unbottle the unforgiven mistakes from his past adds weight to the strong family anchor of the Creed saga that has been supported by Tessa Thompson as his wife Bianca. More than the ripped and sinewy males, she, also holding her own struggles, might very well flex the most emotional muscle of all to lift this tale.

LESSON #3: THE DELINEATION BETWEEN DEFEND AND PROTECT– Symbolically, Creed III dabbles with the semantic differences between the verbs of “defend” and “protect.” One could argue the two words stack together in that “protect” means to prevent harm or damage while “defend” is the action taken in order to protect. The boxing, especially when it culminates between two familiar foes, becomes the body language for that delineation. Thanks to creative camera placements from cinematographer Kramer Morgenthau (Respect, Creed II) and kinetic fight choreography mapped out by boxing consultant Robert Sale and supervising stunt coordinator Clayton J. Barber (The Princess, Judas and the Black Messiah), the in-ring parries and dodges are shown off prominently and become as impressive and exciting as landed strikes. 

By the time the musical score from up-and-coming composer Joseph Shirley (The Book of Boba Fett) swells up with the fireworks-backed introductions inside Dodgers Stadium, all of the profound dynamics structured by the screenwriting and story team of King Richard Oscar nominee Zach Braylin and the brothers Keenan and Ryan Coogler culminate wonderfully. Creed III breaks from the usual shooting-and-editing templates of boxing movies that vary little from the repeating reaction order of prance, punch, commentator, and crowd. 

LESSON #4: TRUE MANO A MANO AT ITS BEST– Right when a typical movie would be turning up the hype volume, Jordan strips away, literally and figuratively for a decent stretch, the flashbulbs, play-by-play announcers, and big crowds that are requisite energy vitamins of a sports movie. In a brilliant and intense stylistic departure, Creed III uses a savvy varnish of VFX during the finale to remove the distractions and put the men against backgrounds of their broken road of bad blood. All that matters in that center is them and their issues. No wives, entourages, coaches, fans, or rah-rah spectacle spill into the ring when the boxing grows into fighting and a cathartic ending coda.

In two sharply-composed hours willing to embrace that kind of empathy, Michael B. Jordan and his collaborators offer welcome and compelling depth to go along with the satiation for fisticuffs that fit the humble origins and comfort zones of this now two-pronged franchise that began nearly a half-century ago. The likes of Stallone and the Winkler family are still around as bankrolling producers, but Creed III is a huge springboarding assertion that this has evolved to become Michael B. MY 100TH GUEST APPEARANCE ON KICKING THE SEAT PROGRAMMING!

As many of you loyal followers may know, friend-of-the-page Ian Simmons of the Kicking the Seat podcast and YouTube channel has been on a year-long moratorium from comic book movies and shows. It has spanned since last May with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. At many times since then, I can’t blame him and envy him. His one caveat was watching things his son wanted to watch.
