MOVIE REVIEW: The Forgiven

Photo by Sife Elamine for Roadside Attractions

THE FORGIVEN2 STARS

Pedigree meets purpose with The Forgiven, the newest film from notable director John Michael McDonagh. Throughout his career, the Englishman has switched back-and-forth with a specialty for embedding foreboding darkness within settings of comedy (The Guard, War on Everyone) and drama (Calvary, Ned Kelly). Contributing his first feature film in five years since the buddy cop comedy War on Everyone, it’s drama’s turn.

Multiple Academy Award nominee Ralph Fiennes and recently gilded winner Jessica Chastain play David and Jo Henniger. From their first appearance, no dialogue is required to detect that the married couple reeks of white privilege. Their curt and cold dialogue to each other and towards the lesser castes of people around them confirm it in short order. They have arrived in the searing heat of Morocco to attend an opulent weekend party.

The high society soiree is hosted by prissy socialite Richard Galloway (The Crown’s Matt Smith), an old friend of David’s, and his more flamboyant American partner Dally Margolis (Caleb Landry Jones, last year’s Best Actor winner from Cannes for Nitram) at their lavishly remodeled desert castle. Traveling from the city of Tarza to Richard’s property at night, the drunk and distracted David strikes and kills a young peddler with his luxury SUV.

LESSON #1: HEY KIDS, DON’T DRINK AND DRIVE– Welcome to the easiest lesson in the world. Double that when you’re also angrily distracted by your passenger(s). Triple that when it’s nighttime. Quadruple it when you’re in a foreign country, the GPS isn’t working, and you don’t really know where you’re going on an unmarked road. Plan better, drink less, switch drivers, or wait for the morning.

When the Hennigers arrive at Richard’s with the teenage boy’s body in their backseat, emotions are high. David is more perturbed than anything else, trying to literally and figuratively wash his hands of his own guilty carelessness. The pearl-clutching Jo is incredibly shaken while Richard attempts to play the proper and calm host knowing that authorities must be called to deal with the situation.

LESSON #2: THE PROTECTIVE CONSIDERATION OF BEST INTERESTS– This tragic accident threatens to smear a person of affluence. Thanks to wealthy privilege, there are dishonest options for this situation. The police can be convinced or bribed that this was an accident. The same can also work for the local kin of the deceased. Richard suggests the miserly David be mindful of his best interests and see this cost as being spared more than being robbed. And, of course, there’s always the cover-up route because they are in a desert. However, there are far too many witnesses, including the more sympathetic local servants of Richard’s, chiefly his stoic and conflicted house manager Hamid (Mourad Zaoui of Netflix’s The Spy).

When the rumors spread and the dead boy’s father (Ismael Kanater) arrives at Richard’s estate the next day, the insistence of local custom takes over. Rather than money, the elder demands that David, the man responsible, accompany him home to bury his son as a sign of forgiveness and integrity. Without another choice to cower behind, David accepts this fate.

His journey splits the narrative of The Forgiven. The father’s trusted friend and courier Anouar (Hollywood’s go-to ethnic chameleon and soothsayer Saïd Taghmaoui) guides David through the risks of this journey venturing deeper into unchecked territory, Meanwhile, when the cat’s away the mice will play. Jo stays behind and slides into ongoing party’s vices and debauchery. The largest temptation is a flirtatious American financial hawk named Tom Day (James White and Black Bear indie darling Christopher Abbott).

LESSON #3: THE VERACITY OF CONTRITION– Nine times out of ten, if an accident like this happens to a commoner, they are distraught and awaiting a hefty legal ordeal. The party, for sure, stops in its tracks. Here in The Forgiven, this death is initially approached as a minor inconvenience curtailed by a cleansing shower, a fresh change of fine clothes, and a reloaded libation. One would have to think the goal of The Forgiven is telegraphing either contrition, comeuppance or both for the Hennigers. If that’s the pure purpose, what transpires is a very long ride for a proverbial wrist slap.

With these dual settings for the second and third acts, writer and director John Michael McDonagh bends the dichotomy of an unnerving descent into danger versus the perpetuation and continuation of sinful ambivalence. Pushes of external judgment in small moments are presented in the behaviors and momentary stump speeches Kanater’s father and of some of the party guests, including Caleb Landry Jones’ cruder better half Dally and Marie-Josée Croze’s (The Barbarian Invasions, Munich) documenting photographer. Their weak jabs come and go with little effect between silent grieving for Kanater and sips of cocktails and moneyed gazes from the other two.

For too much of The Forgiven, the deeper offenses, be them long-held ethnic slander, motivated resentment, and that capital “W” privilege, are undisciplined. Even if the threat of a gunshot of retribution stands as the great equalizer for manslaughter, what’s one less priggish cad in the world? The rich stay aloof and the natives stay contained. The desired shift towards what the film’s title calls for and the pound of flesh required to fill it is inadequate and unmoving, especially from the filmmaker that crushed us with similar goals in Calvary.

AWARDS: Nominees for the 2022 Hollywood Critics Association Midseason Awards

The 5th Annual Hollywood Critics Association Midseason Awards Nominations Have Been Announced

A24’s Everything Everywhere All At Once leads the nominees with a total of eight nominations.

The Hollywood Critics Association has revealed its full list of nominees for the 5th Annual Hollywood Critics Association Midseason Awards. Each June, the members of the Hollywood Critics Association come together to take a look back at the films released during the first half of the calendar year. During the second to last week of June, the members of the HCA vote (including myself) on the films that they believe stood out as some of the best that the year had to offer so far.

“2022 was the first year since 2019 where theaters saw a true return to normal,” notes HCA Founder, Scott Menzel. “While the Sundance Film Festival remained virtual in 2022, other festivals, including SXSW and Cannes, returned to their in-person celebrations, which as a result, attracted movie lovers from all over the world to return to film festivals.”

The box office has shown tremendous growth with films like Top Gun: Maverick breaking box office records across the world while the indie sensation Everything Everywhere All At Once became the highest-grossing A24 movie of all time. “In a year where audiences are returning to theaters, we couldn’t be happier to be celebrating our never-ending love of film and this year’s Midseason Awards nominees showcase a wide variety of films that include blockbusters and indie gems,” adds HCA co-founder, Ashley Menzel.

Leading the way with a total of eight nominations is Daniels’ Everything Everywhere All At Once. The film, which had its World Premiere at SXSW, has become a critic and audience favorite ever since its release in April. The film’s nominations include Best Picture, Best Actress for Michelle Yeoh, and Best Director for The Daniels.

Matt Reeves’ The Batman came in second place with five nominations for the film, including Best Picture and Best Director. Tom Cruise and the team behind the box office juggernaut known to the world as Top Gun: Maverick were also nominated. The film received a total of four nominations, including a Best Actor nomination for Tom Cruise and a Best Supporting Actor nomination for Miles Teller.

Even though exclusivity on the big screen returned in full force this year, several streaming titles received some love from the HCA as well. Films like Cha Cha Real Smooth, Good Luck To You, Leo Grande, Turning Red, and Fresh were all nominated.

Life's Truth About Crime: 11 Best Movies Based on True Facts

Life's Truth About Crime: 11 Best Movies Based on True Facts

Films about gangsters, criminals and con men have always had an audience success. At the same time, the events described in crime movies are often not a figment of the imagination of screenwriters and directors. Here are 11 of the best movies in the history of cinema, based on real events, which every cinephile will appreciate.

Casino

Scorsese's not-so-famous, yet underrated film is the thematic sequel to "Goodfellas" starring Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci. "Casino" is what National Casino fans will love. It's based on the book of the same name by Nicholas Pileggi and Larry Schallings, in turn inspired by the scandal between the gangster casino manager Frank Rosenthal and his wife Geri McGee, a former stripper.

Catch Me If You Can

Not the most significant, but one of Steven Spielberg's most fascinating works. The film tells the story of Frank Abignale, a young man who amazed the world with his daring machinations in the 1960s. Leonardo DiCaprio received a Golden Globe nomination for his brilliant performance as the charming con man.

Zodiac

Zodiac is the nickname of a deranged serial killer who kept the people of San Francisco terrified for a quarter of a century. Fincher's reconstructed history of the years-long investigation and his precise staging turn this film into something more sinister than the usual serial killer movie.

American Hustle

Academy favorite David O. Russell has made an adventurous retro movie based on a real-life ABSCAM anti-corruption operation conducted by the FBI in the 1970s. The film is full of unexpected twists and double transitions, but its key advantage is the recreated atmosphere of the era with its pop music and trendy dances.

The Wolf of Wall Street

Martin Scorsese and Terence Winter adapted the most scandalous episodes from the memoirs of broker Jordan Belfort, convicted of fraud. Perhaps the maestro's most audacious and liberated film is a hilarious crime comedy that realistically depicts a world of criminals steeped in lust and luxury.

A Man Escaped or: The Wind Bloweth Where It Listeth

Robert Bresson used for the script the story of Lieutenant Devigny's prison escape, which was printed in the literary supplements to Le Figaro. The director wanted to achieve the utmost truthfulness of life on screen, so he dispensed with professional actors so that their recognizability wouldn't impair the integrity of the viewer's perception.

The Untouchables

Brian De Palma's gangster epic starring Kevin Costner as FBI agent Eliot Ness and Robert De Niro as famed American gangster Al Capone. The plot is based on the struggle between the police and the king of the underworld.

Wolf Creek

It's one of the scariest horror movies of the 21st century. Three students arrive in this country to find a mysteriously shrouded crater formed by a meteorite fall, but end up becoming part of a terrifying story themselves. This crater actually exists and is called Wolf Creek.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre

Toob Hooper's classic horror movie is a free interpretation of the crime story of serial killer Ed Geen. Although the main villain of the picture was a fictional maniac "Leatherface", the picture is characterized by striking naturalism and realism.

Bonnie and Clyde

The movie is based on the true story of Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow, famous American burglars who operated during the Great Depression. The film's sharp, bloody climax is revolutionary to this day.

All the President's Men

A four Oscar-winning movie starring Dustin Hoffman and Robert Redford. The screenplay is based on the documentary book of the same name by The Washington Post journalists who investigated the Watergate scandal.

Top 5 Attractions You Shouldn’t Miss at Dubai Festival City Mall This 2022

Whether you live in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) or come here often, make sure you visit Dubai Festival City.

Accessible via the Business Bay and Al Garhoud bridges, Dubai Festival City is a first-class leisure district with some of the best apartments for rent in Dubai. It also has complete amenities that support living alone in peace or raising a healthy, happy family.

Considered one of the most glamorous tourist destinations in the country, the place is home to one-of-a-kind world-renowned experiences that appeal to tourists and locals alike.

At the centre of it all is Dubai Festival City Mall – an entertainment hub that offers more than a shopping paradise. Here, you’ll find unique experiences that could make your year all the more memorable.

Gearing up for a trip to the UAE anytime soon? Be sure to try the five best 2022 attractions Dubai Festival City Mall has to offer:

1. New IMAGINE Dubai Shows

Dancing fountain shows in Dubai are always appealing to the people in the UAE. The city alone has several phenomenal light and water shows that combine art and science to deliver awe-inspiring presentations.

In 2021, Dubai Festival City Mall teamed up with streaming platform Anghami to offer the latest music and make IMAGINE Dubai shows much more impressive.

At the time, the tandem yielded an amazing water, light, and music show that featured Ed Sheeran’s hit single, “Bad Habits.”

But this year, the two-time record-breaking sensory extravaganza is inspired by music from the queen of Arab pop, Nancy Ajram. The fountain’s water and lights dance to the tune of “Salamat” – Ajram’s hit single from her 10th album, “Nancy 10” for a span of six months following the show’s debut on January 19, 2022.

This proves that the team-up between Dubai Festival City Mall and the streaming service provider offers new fountain shows in Dubai that you wouldn’t want to miss.

2. Mesmerizing Sunset Dhow Rides

The dhow cruise is another popular attraction in Dubai Festival City Mall that you’ll want to try out when you visit. Perfect for people on a relaxing vacation, this experience also provides a glimpse of Emirati culture.

For the uninitiated, dhows are water vessels that have sailed the waters of the Arabian Gulf for hundreds of years.

In the past, dhows set off for East Africa around wintertime (from mid-November towards the end of February). Mostly built from Indian teak, these vessels carried various products across the Gulf – ivory, shells, wood, and coconut from Africa; goats, sheep, tallow, cattle, and shark fins from Somalia; dates, salt, and dry fish from Arabia.

Today, however, the dhows carry couples, families, and solo travellers who wish to witness a breath-taking sunset along the scenic Dubai Creek. Dhow cruises also usually serve mouthwatering dinners consisting of delicious Emirati dishes and other gastronomic wonders.

3. BOUNCE-X Freestyle Terrain

A bigger fan of active adventures? Dubai Festival City Mall also has something that perfectly suits you.

BOUNCE-X is a freestyle terrain built into two interconnected floors for the most thrilling family activity you can have inside a mall.

Spanning over 5,000 square metres of floor area, BOUNCE-X combines some of the most exciting movement art and freestyle sports elements in one massive indoor playground.

Adrenaline junkies and newbies alike are welcome to enjoy the park’s obstacle courses, inspired by the 33 existing BOUNCE facilities around the world. Located near the mall’s P3 parking, the adventure hub even has an area designed for little children, allowing them to explore and develop their love for adventure within a safe and supervised environment.

Designed mostly for freestyling, the indoor park is the perfect place to do backflips, vaults, leisure drives, Baranis, jumps, straddles, back-drops, and almost all freestyle manoeuvres known to man. This is true not only for experts but also for beginners exploring the wonders of such activities.

Some of the awesome obstacle courses you’ll find here include:

  • Free-run area

  • Halfpipe trampoline

  • Infinity Wall

  • Ninja courses

  • Freestyle sports arena

  • Giant airbags

  • Slides

  • Trapezes

  • Parkour

  • SlamBall

  • The Valley

  • Dodgeball arena with basketball hoops

  • Zipline

For kids, the Junior Jumpers section offers interesting courses, such as the funnel ball, junior climbing wall, soft play area, some small trampolines, and a climb and slide tower.

MOVIE REVIEW: Press Play

PRESS PLAY–4 STARS

LESSON #1: WHICH SONGS TAKE YOU BACK?-- The phenomenon of memories evoked by songs is irresistible. It only takes a few chords or notes. Be it Rick Blaine in Casablanca, Rob Gordon from High Fidelity, or any of us in real life, people hear a cherished track and their brain bursts with recall to the time, place, mood, and people that accompany the musical memory. We all have songs that take us back, from the classic and blissful to the somber and weird. The sunny and serendipitous new romantic drama Press Play turns that rush into a catalyst for out-of-body time travel.

Before we chase the spinning clocks and musical scale of Press Play, we have two young twenty-something Hawaiians looking to figure out their next steps without significant others. Laura, played by Clara Rugaard of I Am Mother, is a talented and aspiring painter close to beginning a year-long fellowship at a prestigious local art school. She gets prodded by her match-making best friend Chloe (Runaways cast member Lyrica Okano) to go out with her stepbrother Harrison. Played by Top Gun: Maverick’s Lewis Pullman, Harrison works at Lost and Found Records run by Danny Glover’s sagely Cooper when he’s not surfing or preparing for medical school.

Over a Japanese Breakfast song and concert first date, Laura and Harrison hit it off quickly and become inseparable. Their differing career plans threaten their future, yet undeter their burgeoning love and connection. Being the more bohemian music fan of the two, Harrison begins to make a cassette mixtape chronicling their relationship’s peaks and valleys.

LESSON #2: THE AGE AND ART OF MIXTAPES– Call it a mild Millennial nod to analog sentimentality if you must, but the use of mixtapes in Press Play counts as an extremely lovely bit of charm. To see the walls of Cooper’s shop lined with submitted or retrieved mixtapes multiplies the specialness of their existence and creation. Better than a Spotify or YouTube playlist built on clicks and whims, a good old-fashioned and hand-recorded cassette tape requires dedicated planning and passionate input. Like the person you share the mixtape with, the result is something personally valuable, tangible, and irreplaceable.

The mixtape becomes the light science fiction wrinkle of Press Play. Whenever Laura pops in their cassette and turns her Walkman on, electrified magic occurs. Her consciousness jumps back into her past self during the precise moment when the personally-curated songs became inspirational for the couple. The leaps of time go back years, and here’s the real rub, to when Harrison was still alive after being tragically killed on his birthday by a drunk driver.

Like most time travel movie scenarios, butterfly effects of unintentional changes and flawed ramifications in Press Play jostle our central characters. The tape does not rewind. Debut director Greg Björkman and writing partner James Bachelor stretch out a story by Josh Boone (The Fault in Our Stars) to where Laura has one sole playthrough and timeline to make the most of the revived and lyrical minutes. The movie dabbles with soulmate fate to ask, “is the future inevitable or do we have a say?”

LESSON #3: THE SECOND CHANCE TEMPTATIONS OF TIME TRAVEL– With this tape, Laura has a series of second chances to either relive moments for closure or attempt to fix what she believes can be prevented. Audiences too will undoubtedly wrestle with what they would do with this kind of power or opportunity, especially with its unique and narrowed premise that links and blends redux moments to the memories of songs. They will close their eyes, hear their own songs from Lesson #1 again, and mentally play out scenarios of selfish hope and love differently alongside Laura.

Press Play rightfully roots for our approachable lovers. She’s not a superficial stunner, he’s not an empty stud, and both actors are believably playing their ages, breaking a trend for the usual “summer of young love” subgenre. Clara Rugaard plays this woman, challenged by emotional loss, with a mature strength beyond what is too often the default setting of weepy helplessness. Not to be outmatched, Lewis Pullman balances her with an understated, yet effectual charisma. While not breaking thermometers with steamy escapades, their united glow is plenty magnetic and passionate. Add in the gorgeous Hawaiian skies and topography captured by cinematographer Luca Del Puppo, coincidentally working on his second scenery-rich shoot this year after the North Carolina beauty of Along for the Ride, and the movie has a cozy pleasantness that is hard to knock.

The very same geniality and infatuation within the narrative can be assigned to Press Play’s suave soundtrack. Eldad Guetta’s piano-forward score supports and a track list from music supervisors Leah Harrison and Season Kent filled with promising artists like Dayglow, Amy Stroup, Father John Misty, Ashley Jane, and Slowdrive. Japanese Breakfast is blowing up right now, so to have Press Play nab them for an on-screen concert performance and their single “Boyish” is quite the chart-topping coup. Without the peppy energy and alluring vibe of these songs, the draw of the movie’s romance goes nowhere. Take a chance on this one. You will find something for your eyes and ears to love.
