How to Start a Budget Friendly Movie?

Image: https://ift.tt/ogAmv7KHX

How to Start a Budget Friendly Movie?

Low-budget filmmaking necessitates careful consideration of the sort of narrative you want to tell. However, budget friendly movies are not that easy to make and that is why a lot of different people take loans from banks such as samlelån as well as Ikano, to help them increase the budget. Ideas about how to make a low-budget film might be difficult to come by, but you'd be amazed how liberating stringent constraints can be for your creativity. After you have created your budget-friendly script, you will need to figure out how to spend your limited funds wisely. There are a lot of different factors that you will need to consider.

Equipment

If you can't work with relatives or family members who possess filmmaking equipment, working with crew who do is the next best alternative. Hiring a director of photography with their own camera equipment is nearly usually less expensive than renting from a rental house. You don't want to take advantage of their kindness, so if they're carrying their own gear, offer them a higher charge.

Design of the Production

If you're lucky enough to be working with an experienced production designer or art director, you might be able to negotiate fantastic prices on any props or set decoration materials you need for your film. However, if you're on a tight budget, you might not be able to afford a specialized production designer at all.

Locations

It's not always possible to shoot a film entirely in your own house. If this is the case, contacting venues directly will save you money on agency fees and allow you to negotiate a better bargain. This saves money on travel expenses. It's also a good idea to look for a location that doesn't require any additional art direction or set dressing; otherwise, you'll have to hire it for more days and pay your team for extra prep time. Making a low-budget film appear professional is a skill in and of itself. Finding beautiful settings with plenty of natural light is a good way to start.

Crew

Crew fees account for a large amount of a film's budget. When working on a low budget film, the simplest method to reduce this is to hire as small a crew as possible. Many crew members, like actors, will gladly accept a reduced salary for a passion project. This is something to consider while assembling your group. If you think you'll need extra aid on set, enlisting the support of friends and family might be a cost-effective solution.

Casting

If you don't have any actor friends who are ready to help, the most cost-effective option to cast your film is to contact actors directly through services like Mandy. This eliminates the need to hire a casting director, and you can even ask performers for self-tapes to save renting a real place for auditions. There are lots of novice performers prepared to accept a lower pay in exchange for show reel content.

Review of The Wolf of Wall Street

by Lewis Robinson

Martin Scorsese’s film The Wolf of Wall Street is a tale of greed and excess in the pursuit of the American dream. Although it’s the most successful film Scorsese directed, it created a surge of controversy upon its release. Critics slammed the movie for its graphic sex, drug use, and carefree attitude on white-collar crime. It’s not for all tastes, and it’s not a movie that you sit down and watch with the entire family. However, the film is lifted above the disturbing material by its talented cast. Leonardi DiCaprio, Jonah Hill, and Margot Robbie do not portray likable characters, but they’re so well developed and fascinating that you cannot look away when they make horrible decisions.

Humble Beginnings

Leonardo DiCaprio plays a middle-class stockbroker (Jordan Belfort) who lucks out and gets a job at L.F. Rothschild in 1987. Mark Hanna (Matthew McConaughey) runs the wall street firm, and he teaches Belfort that drugs, sex, and greed are vital to a stockbroker’s life. McConaughey only appears briefly in the film, but his delusional advice and explosive energy are entertaining and hilarious to watch. Unfortunately, Belfort entered the firm on Black Monday when the stock market crashed. He loses his job and eventually must find work at a boiler room in Long Island selling penny stocks. His new environment is bleak and depressing compared to his high-energy job in Manhattan. The Wolf of Wall Street shows audiences the time before online trades and the hybrid workplace, but it does not make you pine for those simpler days.

Hard Selling

Frustrated that his new job is not as dynamic as his last one, Belfort tries a new strategy to make himself rich. He becomes more aggressive with his investors and convinces them that their cheap stocks are more valuable than their actual worth. When the price of the stocks skyrocket, Belfort quickly sells them and makes enormous profits. Belfort teaches his “hard sell” methods to his colleagues and eventually forms a new company called Stratton Oakmont. Belfort is nothing more than a carnival con man who defrauds his clients and gains wealth from their losses, but he promotes himself as a savvy broker. Behind the scenes of his growing empire, he and his employees engage in heavy drug use, orgies at the office, and even tossing little people against a giant wall of Velcro.

From Bad to Worse

Oliver Stone’s film Wall Street touched on America’s obsession with acquiring wealth at any cost, but it seems tame compared to the debauchery in the Wolf of Wall Street. After Stratton Oakmont is formed, Belfort and his immoral team members enjoy a non-stop party at their investor’s expense. His firm’s success soon grabs the attention of the FBI and CEI, and he works tirelessly to hide his wealth and evade the authorities while becoming increasingly addicted to cocaine and other drugs. Belfort’s life is a trainwreck of his creation, and you cannot feel sympathy when he keeps digging himself into a bigger hole. Watching 179 minutes of Wall Street decadence would be almost impossible without the film’s humor.

Despicable and Funny

The Wolf of Wall Street is a chaotic drama, but the long story goes by fast because of its clever dialogue and humorous situations. DiCaprio is a charming villain who stumbles through life while incapacitated by a long list of illegal substances. Watching him run a brokerage firm like a neo-Caligula makes you wonder how successful he could have been if he and his colleagues were sober. “Wolf” is not a film that glorifies drug use or immoral acts. It’s more cautionary than exploitative, and it shows viewers how easy it is for one person in an elevated position to steal money from thousands of investors. The real Belfort only spent two years in prison, and he now makes money by making motivational speeches to blue-chip firms. Scorsese’s American dream story is warped, but that’s his point. Corruption, greed, and despicable acts can make you rich in the United States without too many consequences.

GUEST COLUMN: Four Movies You May Have Overlooked In 2021

Four Movies You May Have Overlooked In 2021

by Lewis Robinson

The film industry has been going strong this past year despite the reduced attendance at theatres. It has responded to recent events well, switching delivery to early streaming and doing very well for itself. The year has seen its share of mainstream blockbuster films such as Marvel's latest installments "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings" and "Black Widow". This year also produced new Disney fare in the form of "Jungle Cruise" and "Cruella" and a welcome re-do of the sci-fi classic "Dune".

All of these blockbusters have done so well at the box office that chances are, if you are reading this article, you have probably seen most of them. However, the past year also produced some incredible, strange and extraordinary films that may not have made the blockbuster list but definitely deserve your attention. The next time you're having a Netflix night, here is a list of movies that you should check out.

The Truffle Hunters

On the surface, the subject matter of this little film isn't going to make it onto the top suggestions of any sales metrics specialist, but it is so much more than what it seems. This is the story of a group of older men who live their lives, along with their beloved dogs, hunting white truffles.

Set in the forests of Piedmont, Italy, the location and cinematography of this film are breathtaking. The lifestyle of these men, isolated and devoid of most modern technology, harkens back to simpler times. This is a movie about tradition, friendship and finding joy in your life. If you give this film a chance, you might find yourself thoroughly enchanted.

The Last Duel

On its face, this movie belongs on a blockbuster list and not one about quirky alternatives. It is a big-budget Ridley Scott film that made it to #58 in box office sales and features some straight-up superstars including Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Adam Driver and a stunning performance by Jodie Comer. For whatever reason, trailers present the film as though it were a star-studded historical romance but that's not what this is.

This film is both horrifying and hilarious and uses an actual historic event to send a message about the oppression of women in a world of ego-driven men and the cancellation of the female perspective in history. There are no male heroes here and the combination of unexpected comedy and in-your-face violence in this film will keep you off-kilter for the length of the film. Scott tells the story from several different perspectives refusing to allow the audience to be truly certain about anything.

Spencer

Pablo Larraine has taken what has been the subject of many a bio-pic, the story of Princess Diana, and turned it into a fantastical and dreamlike film. He focuses on the impact that living the royal life had on the sometimes fragile Spencer and extrapolates that into a fantasy world that, although not based in fact, may give the most intuitive look yet at the mindset of this tragic princess.

The Green Knight

This is a gorgeous retelling of the ancient Arthurian legend of Gawain and the Green Knight. It stars Dev Patel, who is making quite a career for himself playing famous literary characters such as his recent venture as Dicken's David Copperfield. The film manages to honor its source material while also taking it apart and putting it back together in a completely new way. The director was reportedly heavily influenced by the fantasy films of the 80s such as "Willow" and "Legend" and it shows in wonderful ways. Gone are the superfluous Disney-esque images that tend to infest Arthurian films and in its place is a beautiful starkness and a focus on the individual's responsibility to live their life with integrity whether that brings them rewards or not.

The draw of the mainstream blockbuster film is strong, and no one is saying you shouldn't indulge. Who can resist the pull of another awesome Marvel movie? But this is only a small sampling of the amazing films that are waiting for you if you should decide to stray off the beaten path.

GUEST EDITORIAL: How to Write a Powerful Film Proposal?

Image: https://ift.tt/zXalJ2bT1

How to Write a Powerful Film Proposal?

by Jessica Fender

If you have just graduated from film school or are an aspiring scriptwriter, one of your major ambitions is to get your story on the big screen. It requires a lot of dedication and commitment to be able to do that. Each scriptwriter has their own way of storytelling. Every script is unique so each of them also has access to different film producers depending on their requirements.

Just like when applying for a job, to make sure that your resume is up-to-date for a film proposal to be accepted, you need to take care of the meticulous details. Here are some of the things you should think of while writing a film proposal.

Identify the audience

The first and the most important thing to get your script approved is to identify who the film is for. Identifying your audience ensures that the film has to offer value. Each genre of film has a different audience. Every audience expects a different kind of storyline and theme.

Know the script

This can be better put out as having your script memorized. Before a production company could approve your film, they need to have a good idea of what your film is about and the idea behind your film. You can take inspiration from other movies in the same genre. Every genre is different and requires different skills. A business movie plot will be very different from a romantic movie. Make sure you know how to differentiate them.

Just like any other career essay for a job position, your script will decide whether it is going to make it to the big screen or not. So, make sure you know the script by heart. Production companies listen to many pitches, so they know when a script is written half-heartedly. Your hard work should be evident in your script if you have put in the right time and effort into writing it.

Begin with a synopsis

A synopsis is one of the integral parts of a film proposal. A synopsis tells your audience what to expect from your film proposal. It should be unique and attention-grabbing but should not give away too much of the film plot. It should just motivate the audience to keep listening to your proposal further. With the synopsis, you can tap into the audience’s imagination and keep them curious about what happens next.

Come up with an attention-grabbing logline

A logline is a short phrase that summarizes your entire film. You can be as creative with the logline as you can. Think about a creative logline, and you can pitch it to the production company. Think about how you could pitch your story to the company within 30 seconds or lesser.

When evaluating film proposal production companies value the logline a lot. Since they have a lot of story plots available on a daily basis, they often assess the film plot by how catchy the logline is.

Explain your characters

The more evidence you have to support that your film is going to turn out great, the more production companies will be introducing it to the big screen. One of the ways to do it is to break down the descriptions of your characters. It is not a difficult task if you are invested in your script.

Make sure that the characters are easily distinguishable from each other. Two or three lines in your description may be enough if you choose your words wisely.

Define your characters well

In order for your film to be approved the scope of your project should be good. To make a film you also need resources. A film company will often judge the resources for a film from your script. They often have their own contacts and extra characters available to facilitate you.

Make a small wish list for each character that demonstrates their profiles in a simple manner. Make sure you promote inclusivity in your characters and do not have unrealistic beauty standards. In a nutshell, you should get your vision across to your audience via your characters.

Choose the right pattern

Just like a professional essay has a general pattern to follow, you also have to follow a pattern while writing a script too. A film story consists of an introduction, climax, and resolution. You may get as creative as you like within these three acts however, try not to change this sequence for a good impression. These three parts often make your script easy to read for the production company. You do not always need a co-writer or an editor if you are dedicating the time and effort required by your script alone.

A script is often explained using storyboards. A storyboard tells the audience why you have written it a particular way. You also illustrate your story via a storyboard. If you keep some simple visual rules in mind you often do not need a professional illustrator to do this for you. The framing of your storyboard matters a lot too. It lays out the elements that are a necessary part of your script.

Elaborate what resources you need

As a scriptwriter, your job is not only to get the film written but also to elaborate on what resources will your film require. A production company needs a strong plot and a captivating idea within its budget. If you are going beyond the budget or expecting a huge number of resources in your film then your script has more chances of getting rejected.

Make sure your script is free of grammatical errors

Even if you have an amazing plot and a well-articulated storyline, your script may not get approved by production companies if it lacks the basic grammar and punctuation checks. A proofread script will have minimal errors. This also shows your audience how much effort you have put into writing the script.

You can always find assignment help online if you are not able to edit on your own. Make sure that the final product that reaches the production company is well edited and proofread.

Conclusion

Scriptwriting requires a lot of attention to detail and continuous improvement. Only then the script can make it to the big screen. Do not get demotivated if your first few experiences are not very good. They will eventually get approval. You have to keep working hard to hone your skills to be able to achieve your dream to get your story to the big screen.

Best PCs for Movies and Music Production

Image: https://ift.tt/ikcdj3L7S

Best PCs for Movies and Music Production

The field of music production is brimming with the most cutting-edge technologies. Even if you already have all of the other music production equipment, you need to get other components cheap. Now you must either update the current PC or get a new one. Alternatively, you could choose to invest in a good desktop for music production. Whatever circumstance you're in, you'll have a plethora of options to pick from. Nevertheless, here are some of the best PCs for music production as well as for filming and directing movies.

1) Lenovo M710

It's ideal for someone who like to accomplish all of their creating in one location. It features a small footprint and plenty of ports, so you can get the most out of it. However, even if you spend a lot of money, you'll still need a screen, which might be considerably more expensive. Despite the fact that this model is excellent and performs well, you may need to attach a decent quality screen, which might cost a lot more than you expect.

2) Apple MacBook Air

Many music producers utilize Apple goods because they're economical, high-quality, and attractive, and Apple's products consistently outperform expectations. The Air model is a lower-cost alternative to the Pro, but it's still of excellent quality.

The speakers, on the other hand, are severely lacking. You need a laptop or PC with strong speakers and loudness as a music producer, but this device lacks both. It isn't the laptop's make or break, but it is a crucial feature that it lacks. One of the key reasons why this model isn't at the top of the list is because of this.

3) Acer Predator 300

This model of the brand Acer is not just terrific for slaughtering zombies and rapid vehicle chases, but it's also one of the more economical gaming laptops. It's the best option for anyone looking to make good music. If you're intending to use the laptop for more than simply music production, you may update the processor for a speedier laptop. The laptop is rather sturdy, so the user can trust it even if the laptop falls or is dropped several times. However, it is also hefty and difficult to travel, which might be a drawback if you want to compose music on the move.

4) Apple iMac 5K

There's nothing to be concerned about because it's incredibly slender and attractive on the outside. If you get this model, you will be sure to wow all of your production buddies. Nonetheless, it is a significant investment. It's one of the most costly versions on the market, but that's only because of how much fun and utility it provides. It's ensuring that all tasks are completed fast and efficiently. Overall, this model is a fantastic investment. It comes with everything you'll need to make the finest music possible, and you won't have to wait long to get started. They're easily accessible and can be purchased.

GUEST EDITORIAL: Work-From-Home Opportunities for Arts and Entertainment Professionals

Image: https://ift.tt/qQ9FO8HhB

Work-From-Home Opportunities for Arts and Entertainment Professionals

by Lisa Walker

The arts and entertainment field has been heavily impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. As a highly contagious variant circulates, events continue to suffer from cancellations and restrictions. If you work in the arts and entertainment field, you may be frustrated about how you're going to continue to sustain through this tough time.

Luckily, you can leverage your talents via work-from-home opportunities. Every Movie Has a Lesson invites you to read on to learn how you can make a living without leaving your living room.

Types of remote jobs for artists and entertainers

There are many remote options for artists and entertainers. You might teach courses, for example. If you pre-record courses, this can be  a passive income stream. You can also live stream performances or footage of you creating your art. Yet another option is to get active on social media, paving the path towards potentially monetizing your channels.

Alternatively, you can look at remote jobs offered by companies. For example, if you're a pro with graphic design tools, you can apply for graphic design jobs. If you're a skilled animator, video animation gigs are a great fit. The trend towards remote work is remaining strong, so even if you're employed, odds are you can work from home.

Where to find work-from-home opportunities

To simplify the search when looking for work-from-home opportunities, develop a targeted plan. For example, if you want to sell pre-recorded courses, you'll probably want to set up an account on a platform like Udemy. If you want to start freelancing as a graphic designer, you might join a work-for-hire platform like 99Designs.

If you want to cast a wider night, you can look at online job search engines. Simply specify keywords relevant to your skills, like "writing" or "animation," and specify the location as "remote" or "telecommute." This will give you an idea of what types of opportunities on the market match your skill set.

How to set up your own business

Depending on your resources and interests, you might consider setting up a business and becoming an entrepreneur. When choosing a business model, focus on something you can do well and that you'd be happy doing day after day. Also consider what tools and resources you'll need to get started and your overhead costs.

Once you've got an idea, solidify the details using a business plan. This document provides operational details like how you'll market your business. For example, if you're planning to set up an ecommerce shop to sell prints of your artworks, you probably want to advertise on social media. A business plan template can help you hammer out the details.

Practical considerations for freelancers and entrepreneurs

Whether you decide to set up a business or freelance, there are logistical points to consider. First, if you're working from home, what supplies do you need? In addition to artistic tools, you'll probably want some business technology like a computer. Then, determine whether you'll need to hire any help—for example, to assist with marketing.

Finally, consider administrative steps. If you want to formally establish a business entity, you'll have to register it with your secretary of state. You also need to figure out details like tax obligations. Note that your tax reporting requirements will depend largely on what type of business entity you form. In many cases, an LLC can be the best choice, since this offers both personal asset protection and tax advantages. When you're ready to register, use a formation service like ZenBusiness to make this a quick and affordable process.

Steps for scaling up your business or freelancing career

As you become better established in your business or freelancing career, you may want to grow your offering. The key to success is marketing. This will help you attract more customers to your brand. Start by focusing on low-cost marketing techniques, like social media and content marketing. You can then advertise more widely.

The COVID-19 pandemic has taken a toll on artists and entertainers. However, you don't have to give up on pursuing your passion. While there may be restrictions on in-person events, you can find other ways to make money. The above guide provides some ideas to get you started on your working-from-home journey.

GUEST EDITORIAL: 6 Movies To Watch if You Want To Be an Entrepreneur

Image: https://ift.tt/32DWmq2

6 Movies To Watch if You Want To Be an Entrepreneur

by Kevin Gardner

While most movies are a world of fiction, they can still paint quite a realistic picture of what something is like in the real world. Entrepreneurship is no exception. If you're considering going into business for yourself but want a little insight first, check out these six movies about people who built up their businesses, sometimes only to see them crash again.

1. The Social Network

Perhaps the epitome of a movie about entrepreneurship, The Social Network is about Mark Zuckerberg and how he created Facebook and turned it into the empire it is today. Directed by David Fincher, the story follows Zuckerberg (Jesse Eisenberg) as he creates Facebook while studying at Harvard. It also shows a glimpse of how his best friend was pushed out of the company as well as how he was sued by brothers who claimed Zuckerberg stole their idea. This movie's ensemble cast is just part of why it's so watchable. It's also a great reminder that even the biggest companies start small.

2. Joy

Following the life of Joy Mangano (Jennifer Lawrence), Joy is a true-to-life entrepreneur movie that starts with Mangano living with her two children in a rundown house. That isn't it, though. Her ex-husband, grandmother, and divorced parents all live in the house as well. Soon, she has an idea for a cleaning product called the Miracle Mop. As she learns the sales process and tries to get her product off the ground, the movie shows her complicated home life and how it intersects with her business, including promoting her product on QVC. If you're looking for an entrepreneur movie that shows a successful woman, this is it. In real life, Mangano is now a multimillionaire.

3. Pirates of Silicon Valley

Released in 1999, Pirates of Silicon Valley is based on the book Fire in the Valley: The Making of the Personal Computer. The movie focuses on the rivalry between Bill Gates and Steve Jobs, specifically between the years 1971 and 1997. It's an excellent watch if you're interested in the beginnings of two of the biggest technology companies in the world. Be sure to pay special attention when Steve Jobs interviews a potential Apple employee.

4. Jerry Maguire

When you want to see the fall and rise of an entrepreneur, you want to see a classic, Jerry Maguire. Starring Tom Cruise as Maguire, the movie focuses on his firing from a successful company. On impulse, he starts his own sports management agency, and the rest of the movie shows how he builds his business with one client (Cuba Gooding, Jr.) and one employee (Renee Zellweger). Jerry Maguire is an excellent look at the importance of putting your clients first and shouldn't be skipped if you're looking to gain entrepreneurship tips.

5. Startup.com

Startup.com is a documentary that shows you what it was like during the dotcom bubble when internet companies were quickly successful but then failed just as quickly. Specifically, it follows GovWorks, a company that had a promising future until internal power struggles and mismanagement of the company took that future away. It isn't just about the rise and fall, though. This documentary is a cautionary tale of how friendship can turn into rivalries if you aren't careful when doing business together.

6. Wall Street

Starring Michael Douglas as Gordon Gekko and Charlie Sheen as Bud Fox, 1987's Wall Street follows a young stockbroker who dives headfirst into the stock exchange. He finds himself a bit too interested in the glamor of the new lifestyle. Wall Street is an excellent choice if you're someone who's interested in joining the corporate finance world and would like a glimpse into how it works and how it can be too much excitement for some people.

While watching movies can give you a good picture and understanding of the world of entrepreneurship, you won't truly know what it's like until you try it on your own. Remember to create a plan and take your time if you want your business idea to be successful.

GUEST EDITORIAL: Movies Depicting Business Empires

Movies Depicting Business Empires

by Kevin Gardner

Entrepreneurs have plenty of cinematic material from which to draw inspiration. Here are some of the most well-directed cinematic depictions of business empires that are both inspiring and insightful.

The Godfather Trilogy (1972-1990)

Over the course of Francis Ford Coppola's three-part definitive work based on the best-selling novel by Mario Puzo, the audience watches the Corleone patriarchs try to legitimize the family's business empire. Although the family is engaged in organized crime, they manage many conventional businesses. They become leaders in the extremely profitable industry of casinos. The family must contend with competition with rivals and challengers while also making an effort to foster unity between factions that are at odds with one another.

When the family is finally on the precipice of complete legitimacy, Michael Corleone, played by Al Pacino, is put into an impossible position by a lamentable turn of events that prevents him from achieving his ultimate goal of legitimacy. The friction and rancor that exists between the Corleone family and its rivals precipitates a tragedy which ultimately costs Michael more than he can bear to lose. The conclusion demonstrates that nothing in the world of business can supersede the importance of protecting and loving the people who are most dear to you in life.

Joy (2015)

Long before internet marketing, social media outreach, and content management systems, television was arguably the most important advertising tool for businesses. It was especially important for demonstrating new and innovative products. “Joy” shows the uphill battle that a brilliant inventor, Joy Mangano, had to endure in order to successfully market a cleaning product that would change how everyone wanted to clean their homes. Her groundbreaking invention which could best be described as a self-wringing mop was clearly genius, but the hurdles that she faced in getting the word out about her product and making it profitable were astounding. After considerable trials and nearly losing what she had worked so hard to build, she finally became successful.

In addition to showing the challenges associated with starting from the bottom, the movie is an excellent depiction of a home shopping network empire. The volume of products that the network could sell with this form of sales outreach was comparable to the volume of online sales long before that medium existed. The dynamics of how the network worked with inventors and businesses were not always fair to them. Nevertheless, the opportunity to be featured on an infomercial gave them the exposure that they needed to catapult their inventions into the public eye and produce them on a massive scale.

The Aviator (2004)

This movie depicts an aviation and entertainment mogul who defied expectations and went on to build a truly awesome empire. Howard Hughes inherited the wealth with which he built his empire, but it was the risks that he took in the vision which he had that few others shared which makes what he built so impressive. Leonardo DiCaprio's portrayal of the enigmatic figure humanized Hughes boldly and insightfully. It depicted the mental illness and most notably the obsessive-compulsive tendencies which came to be such a dominating force in his life. Despite all that he's built, it was this attribute that he became most well-known for.

Hughes was practically fearless as an aviator. He flew new experimental planes and even broke a world record. It was not a weakness in his character that precipitated his immense fear of germs. Hughes spent the better part of a decade with different starlets on his arm at events attended by the highest members of society. Eventually, he decompensated to the point that he could not bear to occupy the same space as anyone else and became a recluse. Despite having it all, his illness deprived him of practically everything that was important to him.

On your next movie night, pick something that can inspire you professionally. Watching business titans in movies reminds you of the importance of balancing caution and bravery in the world of business.

GUEST EDITORIAL: How Cinema Has Inspired Architecture and Changed Home Design Standards

How Cinema Has Inspired Architecture and Changed Home Design Standards

by Andrew Adams

Cinema has been around for over a century, and in that time, it has inspired some of the most beautiful and iconic buildings in the world. However, cinema hasn't just inspired architecture-it has also changed home design standards for the better. For example, luxury home interior design has taken on the characteristics of luxury movie theaters-modern luxury homes often feature grand, open spaces with high ceilings and spacious rooms; these luxury homes often incorporate luxury materials like marble or gold in their kitchens, bathrooms, bedrooms, and other common areas.

In this article, we'll further explore how cinema has influenced both architecture and home design, and why it is important to keep this art form alive.

Golden Era of Hollywood

The Golden Era of Hollywood lasted from about 1930-to 1960. While cinema was around earlier than this period, it wasn't until the Great Depression that the film industry really started to take off. This was due in large part because more people were unemployed, which led to people going out for a movie. Additionally, Hollywood saw an increase in film production during this time, with the number of movies made per year increasing from 88 movies in 1929 to 477 movies in 1939. This rise in production meant that there was significantly more money going into the cinema industry, which made a lot of people rich and led to a lot of creativity.

Before The Great Depression struck America, many homes were designed with simple classic styles that were plain. Even though people had a lot of nice things, they tended to keep their décor simple, and elegant-they didn't want to waste money on gaudy displays that would only be noticed by the people in the house.

Exterior Shot on Film

The Golden Era also saw the widespread use of an exterior shot which is now standard in filming: using a process shot from outside looking in, rather than from the perspective of characters inside looking out. Before this artistic technique was strongly implemented, the standard for filming was to do everything in one shot without any cuts. This meant that if a scene involved characters standing next to each other, the camera would be directly between them so only one actor could be on screen at a time. With the rise of new film techniques inspired by classic cinema, new styles began being implemented in films.

Process Shot on Film

The process shot is where a location exterior was filmed and then re-filmed with characters in front of the same background. This meant that if there were two people standing below an apartment building, directors would film one actor's part from the perspective of the inside looking out and then film the other actor's part from the outside looking in. This allowed for a much more complex and effective style of cinematography, as characters could be both inside and outside, which was previously impossible to show on screen because of scene length restrictions.

Luxury Shot on Film

As Hollywood became a more profitable business, people began to see luxury homes as investments. In order to attract potential homeowners, architects and contractors began using luxury movies as inspiration for their new homes.

Many of these new homes were lavish, with large rooms and high ceilings. They used expensive materials like marble and gold in the kitchens, bedrooms, closets, bathrooms, etc. Additionally, one common feature was a grand entrance hall where the front door would be located people were no longer interested in small entrances that they would only use once or twice a day. These grand entrance halls were inspired by the foyer in classic films like Gone with the Wind.

This was not an isolated trend by any means during this time, over 1 million homes were built that had features inspired by cinema. With all these new features came new standards for luxury. People were no longer satisfied with a small apartment to live in-they wanted a huge home that could impress guests and ensure security.

Cinema has had a profound impact on both architecture and home design over the years. Its influence can be seen in the way that homes are designed, as well as in the way that films are shot. This art form is important because it allows people to see new possibilities for their lives and inspires them to create beautiful things. We should do everything we can to keep cinema alive and thriving so that it can continue to inspire people all over the world.

The Benefits of Using a Web Design and Social Media Agency

A few years ago, the buzz around web design and social media was that websites and their client's performance were becoming stale. Websites weren't being updated as often as they should be and web pages weren't getting a second lease on life as they should be. In addition to this, search engine algorithms used by Google and other companies were beginning to take notice of these "dead" or outdated websites and penalize them accordingly. This has sparked an overhaul in web design and social media practices across the board in order to keep up with the changing times, keeping Google happy, and helping clients to find their footing in the web design and social media market.

The social media agency Manchester offers their clients a number of services. They can help you with search engine optimization (SEO), social networking optimization (SMO), social bookmarking, and article marketing, to name a few. SEO is very important in the world of the twenty-first century, and having high quality, fresh content in place on your site is essential. If people can find you, they will likely return, and if they can share that content with their friends, they will likely recommend your site to others, building your brand's reputation online and increasing your presence in the marketplace.

Another important element of the web design and social media agency Manchester's portfolio is their extensive brand positioning case study. The web design and social media agency Manchester also know how to optimize your pages and posts for search engines. This isn't the kind of optimization that you do once and then forget about, but rather an ongoing process that requires your website to be "on topic" at all times, updated and reported so that it has the maximum chance of being found when someone searches for your products or services. SEO is one way to ensure that this happens.

The web design and social media agency Manchester can also provide you with social media accounts that can reach your target demographic more effectively than you could by yourself. Facebook, for example, offers millions of users, and these are the folks you want to reach your brand. Twitter is another great choice, as it allows you to follow other people and interact with them on a more personalized level. You can post messages on these accounts in real time, as well as check out what they are posting via RSS feeds. These feeds can be very targeted, allowing you to ensure that what you post is only to those people who are interested in what you have to say.

You may not think that there's much benefit in using a web design and social media agency, but you would be surprised. After all, you might be able to handle the task all on your own, but what good is the internet if you aren't using it to the best of your ability? There is certainly more to this sort of work than meets the eye, and you need someone who knows what they're doing. So contact a web design and social media agency today for more information.

GUEST EDITORIAL: What We Can Learn From Pandemic Movies Before COVID

Image: https://ift.tt/33V5zLc

What We Can Learn From Pandemic Movies Before COVID

by Adrian Johansen

It wasn’t so long ago that the closest the majority of people got to a viral outbreak was an onscreen depiction. It was a threat safely contained within fictional narratives and its information didn’t need to be retained. It seems strange to think watching those same movies now might give audiences some areas for consideration.

Let’s take a look at a few onscreen learning points that are worth revisiting.

Fear and Mistrust

Accurate messaging has been one of the prevalent issues of this pandemic. In a crisis, people look to their leaders for guidance. Though the Korean production, Flu (2013), had some extreme symptoms for dramatic purposes, it handled the issue of communication with relative accuracy. The poor and inconsistent messaging from political leaders and the World Health Organization (WHO) in the movie contributes to heightened fear which erupts into panic and violence.

We can see where this pre-pandemic depiction can help to reflect and inform our real-life relationship to viral outbreaks. In uncertain times, poorly communicated data and advice can serve to exacerbate the public’s mistrust and fear of the unknown. This, in turn, leaves room for misinformation to fill the gap and propagate.

The COVID-19 vaccine response has been hampered by scary news coverage that many people have difficulty evaluating for accuracy. It’s important for people to review the reliability of sources and assess alarming statistics in context. Unfortunately, they too often rely on celebrities and politicians as they feel they should be able to trust these figures. While the impact of misinformation is not as violent as it is in Flu, it is still damaging to recovery efforts.

The Concept of Zoonosis

The concept of zoonosis is not particularly well-understood by a lot of movie-goers or indeed the general public. During the COVID-19 pandemic, this poor grasp of the potential origin of disease has led to a great deal of speculation. In particular, the idea that the virus may have been initially found in bats has spread among the public. Without a good understanding of what this actually means, people have perpetuated harmful racial stereotypes surrounding the eating of bats.

However, this is where the pre-pandemic movie, Contagion (2011) has something to teach us. Much like our present crisis, the film depicts the origins of the virus in bats. More importantly, it takes time to clarify that the transfer to humans through zoonosis is the result of various ecological interactions. In the movie, the destruction of bat habitats to build pig pens leads to dropped bat food being consumed by pigs. Viruses carried by both animals mingle and mutate, which are then passed to humans, resulting in further mutations.

The moviemakers here went to great lengths to make sure the depicted idea of zoonosis was not only scientifically accurate, but also understandable. Importantly, it provided context about how the interconnectedness of ecosystems and behavior influences the mutation of viruses. People need to understand the complexities of the situation, rather than rely on the simplistic inaccuracies that send them down the wrong path.

The Role of Experts

Expertise is vital to handling any public health emergency. Epidemiologists, in particular, play a key role in virus research, liaising with community health professionals, and educating the public. Their ability to identify, gather, and analyze various forms of crucial data can help ensure the response to an outbreak is swift and effective. Unfortunately, a lack of understanding of how these types of experts fit into the process has too often led to the population looking to less-informed public figures for guidance.

There are movies that can be learning opportunities regarding these roles. Outbreak (1995) is a movie renowned for getting some details of virus response wrong. However, it does a relatively good job of demonstrating how wide-reaching epidemiologists’ responsibilities can be. They’re not just standing at a podium telling people what to do. It shows the background work of the investigative process, laboratory research, and interviews with members of the public to better understand the chain of contagion.

We can also look to 1993’s And the Band Played On as a useful insight into the types of hurdles epidemiologists have to overcome. The movie’s protagonist not only struggles to establish accurate data regarding the AIDs virus — additionally they face resentment and clashing agendas among the public, businesses, and politicians who also hamper research and communication efforts. This type of accurate portrayal of medical professionals and their challenges can help educate the public.

Family Impact

In movies, we usually see pandemics through the lens of direct impact on patients. However, there is a distinct effect on families and friends of those experiencing illness, too. It can be difficult to recognize how best to support a loved one that has been admitted to a hospital during a pandemic, as there are often visitation protocols and the need to prevent further exposure. Family members may only be able to communicate remotely for long periods of time. This has thrown a lot of people off-guard.

Unfortunately, there are relatively few good examples of this kind of impact in movies. In some ways, I Am Legend (2007) is one of the better depictions of family impact. Aside from its more outlandish horror elements, it shows families are being separated by necessity as a result of the infection.

Importantly, the film shows the panic resulting from the unknown and unprepared for consequences of immediate separation. Something we can take from this is how important it can be to put plans in place in case one of our family members must be isolated. It’s never going to be a pleasant experience, but by mitigating the unexpected, it can ease pressure on everyone involved.

Conclusion

COVID-19 has caused significant disruption and distress. While it is vital to look at the facts, there are things we can learn from movies released prior to our current crisis. Some highlight the damaging effects of misinformation and fear, while others show technical aspects of disease and those who work to combat it. Whether the current pandemic or those in the future, we need tools to educate people in accessible ways, and movies can play a key role here.

GUEST EDITORIAL: 5 Great Movies About Business

5 Great Movies About Business

by Lewis Robinson

The world of business is complex, multidimensional, and high-stakes. In other words, it’s the perfect setting for Hollywood movies! Business movies can be inspiring biopics, seedy exposes, and everything in between. There’s no limit to the creative inspiration filmmakers draw from business. Here are five very different, but very interesting films about the business world.

“Joy”

Let’s start with the true story of a scrappy entrepreneur who is so determined to succeed that when she does, she sets a whole industry on fire. David O. Russell’s 2015 film “Joy” stars Jennifer Lawrence as Joy Mangano. Joy creates a self-wringing mop, and the movie chronicles her struggle to market it and get it into stores. In the end, she lands a deal with QVC. Long before the days of the hybrid workplace and online sales, home shopping was huge, and Joy makes blockbuster sales selling her mop on television. It’s an inspiring rags-to-riches tale!

“The Greatest Showman”

Business movies can be made in any genre. Case in point: the hugely successful 2017 musical “The Greatest Showman.” “The Greatest Showman” tells the story of the rise of the legendary P.T. Barnum, portrayed by Hugh Jackman in a magnetic performance. Barnum’s empire-building story should be of interest to any business person, and the music is inspiring. The film also features an incredible visual style and strong supporting performances.

“Margin Call”

Making a compelling film about complicated, abstract business concepts can be challenging if not downright impossible. That make’s J.C. Chandor’s 2011 picture “Margin Call” even more impressive. “Margin Call” is a fictional distillation of the subprime mortgage crisis that led to the great recession. An ensemble cast including Kevin Spacey, Paul Bettany, Demi More, Jeremy Irons, and Stanley Tucci walks us through a dramatized series of events when a financial firm discovers the U.S. economy is on the verge of disaster. The film skillfully navigates intricate concepts of economics, leaving with a tense and entertaining tone.

“Steve Jobs”

Steve Jobs was one of the most famous and innovative business leaders of all time. His life was rife with drama and intrigue and has been turned into a few different Hollywood projects. Danny Boyle’s 2015 film “Steve Jobs,” however, rises above the rest.

There are several key components that make this movie unique. First, its screenplay (written by the incomparable Aaron Sorkin) is structured more like a theatrical play than a traditional Hollywood biopic. It has three distinct acts, each delineated to center around a specific milestone moment in Jobs’ life. Second, the restrained direction of Academy Award-winning director Danny Boyle sets an elevated tone. The camera moves just enough to inject action into a very conversational film, and it works masterfully.

Finally, “Steve Jobs” has another great ensemble cast including the iconic Kate Winslet, Seth Rogen, and Jeff Daniels. The centerpiece, however, is Michael Fassbender’s transcendent turn as Jobs. Fassbender has mastered Jobs’ mannerisms, demeanor, voice, and cadence to give a multi-layered and nuanced performance.

“Bowfinger”

How about a business movie about the movie business? Frank Oz’ 1999 comedy “Bowfinger” is an ingenious look at a small-time, hustling filmmaker who “tricks” an a-list actor into being in his movie. The trick is that the actor doesn’t know he’s being filmed, and the secret sauce of the movie is that it’s fronted by two of the funniest people who ever lived: Steve Martin and Eddie Murphy.

What “Bowfinger” does so masterfully is that it not only fully embraces this absurd concept, but it also skewers Hollywood tropes like snooty, high-rolling producers, celebrities using cults for therapy, and gonzo filmmakers cutting corners to get the shots they need. The laugh-filled, smart script was written by Martin himself.

If you love learning about the business world, these movies will give you a lot to think about. If you love good movies, they’ll entertain you and give you respect for the craft of their filmmaking. Business is a fertile field for Hollywood, with limitless opportunities to tell great stories.

4 Movies To Watch or Play in the Background While You're Working

by Lewis Robinson

Growing up, you might have had a family member that seemed to fall asleep better when there was a TV playing in the background. You would still be awake in your bedroom, playing Nintendo and thinking about what you're going to do tomorrow. In the living room, a parent would be snoozing loudly to the sound of Cheers or Golden Girls playing in the background. Believe it or not, there are actually people out there who find the sounds of background TV shows or movies soothing when they sleep. Background noise has proven to be beneficial for people in many areas, such as sleeping or working.

This makes you wonder if there are certain movies that you can play in the background that can actually help you work better. Sure, rainforest sounds or sounds of rain have been shown to be good for working, but are there movies that can help you be more productive? As it turns out, there are a few good movies to play in the background to help you think and execute your work more efficiently. Here are the four best movies to watch while you're working.

1. Moneyball

Moneyball, starring Brad Pitt, is all about a baseball general manager trying to get his team to win big, although he faces the unfairness of being a financially poor team. He hires an economics major who uses data integration to figure out the strengths and weaknesses of certain baseball players so that he can form a better baseball team that is mathematically designed to win. This movie will help you think about using data to achieve your results, yet at the same time, it will inspire you and keep you entertained. It's definitely a movie you can play in the background to help you work.

2. Back to the Future

Everyone remembers the nostalgic Back to the Future starring Michael J. Fox. He gets sent to the past and forms a close relationship with his mother, and at the same time, finds himself playing matchmaker between her and his dad. The reason why this is a good movie to play in the background while you're working is that the nostalgia helps you work better. It brings you back to a peaceful time when you had little worries or cares, and it reminds you of the innocence of your childhood when comedic entertainment was all you needed.

3. The Martian

Another great movie to stream while you work is The Martian, starring Matt Damon. It's about an astronaut that gets stranded on Mars and has to learn to survive on the lonely planet until a crew can come back to rescue him. The movie puts Matt through different struggles, where he has to solve countless problems in order to survive. The movie is great to watch while working because it reminds you that you will encounter problems at work. Just as is featured in the movie, to be successful, the process is simply solving one problem after the other so that you can achieve your results.

4. The Pursuit of Happyness

The light-hearted movie starring Will Smith is a great story about a man who is trying to raise his son alone with no job or money. He tries stressfully to land a job as a stockbroker and faces many challenges along the way, such as getting arrested and hit with a car. The movie is wonderful to stream in the background at work because it shows you that work and life might get worse before it gets better. By watching the movie at work, you will be inspired to continue pushing forward until you get your results. It's just a great way to encourage you throughout your day.

Go ahead and stream some of these great movies while you work to have a more productive day. After all, you will never know if you can be more productive if you stream a movie in the background until you try it.

Whether you have your eye on a career in B2C or B2B marketing, this movie has a lot to teach you about the level of resilience and self-confidence it takes to succeed. Based on the true story of multi-millionaire Joy Magano, the film follows her rocky road to success as the inventor of the Magic Mop. As the primary caregiver of her mother, father, grandmother, ex-husband and two children, failure is not an option for Magano. Coming up with a multi-million dollar idea is only the beginning of her journey. She must battle the foibles of her large family, betrayal from those closest to her, unscrupulous business partners and her own insecurities to secure her success.

2. Moneyball

On the surface, Moneyball is a movie about baseball. Brad Pitt gives a quiet but impressive performance as major league manager Billy Beane as he desperately tries to pull the failing Oakland A's out of a cycle of losses and bad luck. Against the advice of everyone around him, including those who have more experience, Pitt's character makes the bold decision to utilize a new form of statistical analysis to chart his team's course. For prospective entrepreneurs, the movie teaches important lessons about trusting your gut and being willing to take a chance on something new.

3. The Pursuit of Happyness

This is a beautiful film with a heart-wrenching performance by Will Smith that was good enough to get him an Oscar nomination. It tells the true story of Chris Gardner, a highly intelligent salesman who simply cannot catch a break. As the movie progresses, Gardner suffers an unimaginable number of setbacks and obstacles including his wife leaving him with their five-year-old son to care for and becoming homeless. Gardner's dogged pursuit of a better life despite incredible odds will eventually lead him to a highly successful career at Goldman Sachs and the life he has always dreamed of for his son. The tenacity it takes to reach his goals and his refusal to give up even when all seems lost has something to teach any entrepreneur.

4. Jerry Maguire

So, who knew that a movie about a jaded sports agent could be so heartwarming? Jerry Maguire tells the story of the titular character as he struggles to find success in the unscrupulous world of sports management. He recognizes that the way the business is run is heartless and cruel, but he doesn't have the courage to change it. That is, not until he meets irrepressible wide receiver Rod Tidwell and good-hearted single mother Dorothy Boyd and her precocious son. Maguire learns a lesson that would benefit any business person; real success is all about playing from the heart, even in a cutthroat business.

Books, seminars and higher education can give you the business skills you need to possess to become an entrepreneur; however, they won't teach you about the internal fortitude you need to succeed. These four films put forth the idea that it takes something from the gut and from the heart to make it big.

Maguire finds success when he couples his skills with the ability to act from the heart. Gardner achieves his dreams only through near-heroic levels of perseverance. Beane leads his team to great wins by having the courage to take a chance on something new. Magano's success is fed by her intense drive and willingness to fight for what she deserves. These are true stories of highly successful business people who dug deep within themselves to find the resources they needed when others may well have given up.
