4 Casino-Related Movies That Are Based On Real-Life Events
It’s hard not to find yourself suddenly fixated on a movie once you know that it’s based on real-life events. While there may be some extra dramatization for production purposes, the fact that the events transpired in real-life adds a rich realistic layer to the movie. Gambling happens to be one interesting real-life topic that has been made into countless movies. From crime overlords to mathematical geniuses, we’ll be listing the top 4 casino-related movies that have true stories behind them.
1. 21
Launched in 2008, 21 is a movie that’s based on a book called “Bringing Down the House”. What’s interesting is that the book is printed as a fictional story, but the reason behind that is to avoid legal repercussions. In fact, the events of the book, which are also portrayed in the movie, were almost all real events that actually took place. The story follows a young MIT student who was encouraged by the enigmatic and eccentric persona of his professor to join a little project. This project was the attempt to swindle a famous Las Vegas casino out of their money by using complex card-counting techniques. Excellent acting performances by Kevin Spacey, Jim Sturgess, and Micky Rosa.
2. The Hustler
A true classic that never gets old; released in 1961, directed by Robert Rossen and led by Paul Newman. The era where the story unfolds would have viewed the online slots at Winbig as the equivalent of living on Mars. Paul Newman’s eagerness to take on the pool legend Minnesota Fats in a series of pool games led to a terrible experience that had Newman out of money and luck. The events that transpired later on are a true portrayal of gambling in pool-halls and smoky back rooms that the modern casinos were built on.
3. Casino
Casino (1995) is a Martin Scorsese classic that’s still relevant to this very day. It involved the thrilling underworld behind Las Vegas back in the 70s, where the mob ran a considerable number of operations and casinos in the city. The performances of Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, and Sharon Stone truly showed the colors of such a dark and complex layered world. It was based on a book by Nicholas Pileggi, Casino: Love and Honor in Las Vegas. The movie approached the real-life events of infamous mobsters like Rothstein in a fictionalized manner that allowed it to take a few liberal edits to enhance the drama, but it still remains a very straightforward and honest portrayal.
4. Rounders
Those who are interested in understanding the dynamics of a high-roller poker game must watch Rounders (1998). The movie portrays complex poker techniques that are used in high-stakes games. The producers of the movie didn’t market it as a movie based on real-life events, but 10 years later the truth unfolded, as it was based on Norm MacDonald. Matt Damon and Edward Norton were two friends who tried to make as much money as possible quickly to pay off their huge debts.
Naturally, we’re more interested in movies that are related to actual events. There are often numerous topics related to gambling that are discussed, commentated, or narrated in such movies. Whether you’re watching these movies to get a glimpse of the underground gambling world or just to have fun, you’re in for a ride.

The modern TV industry is incredibly focused on serving relevant entertainment to the general public. Every show is targeting a certain demographic and their needs or characteristics. Nevertheless, there are quite a few general trends that occur all over the world. First and foremost is the rise of science fiction. Yes, we do remember good old Doctor Who and a long list of science fiction shows or movies from the mid and late 20th century. However, this niche has never been as active and relevant as it is now.
What has caused the sudden popularity of the sci-fi? Most likely it is about modern reality and how much we have changed as a society. Tech innovations and scientific breakthroughs are determining the present and the future of our world. Therefore, the need for the TV representation of the potential future reality is crucial. After all, we have never been so close to the future. In fact, we can consider that we live in the future already. But what can be more impressive than what we already know and have today? Well, there is that in the newest TNT production Snowpiercer.
The show is the remake of a 2013 movie with the same name. The latter received immediate critical acclaim for being a good science fiction movie with good character development and some unique features. Nevertheless, the 2020 TNT remake came under a lot of criticism for mediocre acting, poor character development, as well as the lack of well-sophisticated heroes and antiheroes.
Yet, there is so much to this show. It is simply mind-blowing to think about the potential life on a train that is 1001 cars long, surfing through the ashes of what used to be the most advanced and well-developed civilization on earth. What Mr. Wilford has tried to do is exactly to replicate the world we used to live in under bearable weather conditions.
The plot is quite simple and without too much scientific reasoning. After climate change and certain natural disasters, the ice age started on earth. With the temperatures outside dropping below 100 degrees, there is no way anyone could survive even inside of a well-protected building. There are no energy supplies and barely any survivors on the face of the planet. So what can one do? Wait to die from the freezing cold?
The plot
Mr. Wilford came up with the eternal engine that is able to support a 1001 car long train with the energy as far as it keeps going. The global top 0.1% showed interest and the train became a reality just in time for the brutal apocalypse. Thousands got onto the train but not everyone could afford the first-class ticket. This gigantic machine is divided into 4 sections. The first class is for the ultra-rich only. The second class is a bit better than the third class, where cars are utterly overcrowded. Then there is the tail. It is the very end of the train where people without tickets managed to hop on just before departure. They are not being appropriately fed and have no personal space.
The train itself is quite diverse. There are cars with clubs, schools, and even brothels. Their ethnicity is also quite varied. Every profession is being utilized on the train that carries the very last bit of the human race. There are former casino owners in the third class who could not afford the first-class ticket. They are now organizing gambling evenings in the back of the train for the first and second class passengers. A Kiwi billionaire that has the entire car to himself enjoyed playing expensive New Zealand live roulette games. Yet, being on the train, he satisfies himself with the poker evenings provided by the third class passengers.
Thus hierarchy is visible in every part of the train operation. Second and third class passengers serve the upper class. They take care of the gardens, of the logistics, of the protection, and even healthcare. On the other hand, the first-class passengers enjoy the highest comfort levels possible. It is simply like living in a 5-star dream hotel for eternity.
Now, as mentioned above, there also are the “tailees” This is how the rest of the train addresses people who are placed in the very back of the train with barely any space or food. More than 400 tailees have been there for years and are not allowed to leave. Over the course of the endless journey, many revolutions have been sparked in this part of the train. Yet, none have managed to succeed and overtake the train.
The highest management of the operation is Mr. Wilford himself. Yet, after the departure of the train, he has not come out of his berth even a single time. What has changed? Why is the administrator of the services conveying Mr.s Wilford’s messages to the entire train? That is the main question that is posed immediately at the very beginning of the show.
After quite some time from the last revolution, there is a new bit of hope in the tail of the train. Despite the conflict, everyone agrees that the life they have been living for years is enough. There have been too many deaths from the last attempt of a revolution. The first season of this show follows this heartbeat of 400 people stuck in the back of a train with endless energy and resources.
Why should I watch Snowpiercer?
If you enjoy science fiction, then this show most certainly is for you. Should you find apocalyptic plots even more appealing, then watching Snowpiercer is essential for you. Besides the good sci-fi plot, the show explores modern-day problems and goes quite deep into the roots of the problem. Social injustice, inequality, and the unfair distribution of wealth are at the very core of the show and its idea. If you are not too much into sci-fi but love exploring how the modern-day issues can affect the civilizations of tomorrow. One big downside of the show is its lack of profound character development plots and not too good acting. Surely, this show is not Emmy-worthy or innovation in the TV industry. The Guardian scored it with only 3 stars, amidst the lack of good acting and character development. Nevertheless, if you like the concept and especially if you loved the 2013 Snowpiercer, then this will be quite an enjoyable experience for you.
Defending Jacob - an exquisite crime drama everyone will enjoy
Over the past few years, we have witnessed many adaptions and excellent shows filmed by big corporations such as Netflix, Hulu, HBO and Apple TV. Thanks to gigantic investments in the film and TV production industry, we now have an opportunity to watch a wide variety of shows. The sector has become so competitive that there is very little point in comparing productions to each other. Rather, we should evaluate and discuss them individually. We have come to the point where every TV product and a movie is remarkably personal.
The year 2020 was extremely important for the industry. This year, we saw releases of a number of great productions along with the new seasons of already loved and highly acclaimed shows. Yet, there has not been too much in the crime category. In general, this niche of the industry seems to be lagging behind significantly, compared to when it was thriving just a couple of decades ago.
When crime truly shines
With the crime category, we do not only mean investigative productions but also action dramas. Does anyone recall the Ocean’s Eleven? Bank robberies and casino thefts? The world might have changed as a whole instead of the sector or the general public. Canadian research has found that the number of luxury gambling venues and their visitors in iconic cities like Montreal and Vancouver are plummeting. This is a result of the fast-growing online gambling sector that is gradually replacing the traditional gambling industry as we knew it before. Therefore, it is obvious that Canadian online roulette games can not provide the environment and the material enough for an entire movie. Therefore, luxury roulette casinos and movies based on them are slowly fading away.
Yet, this trend does not only concern the action crime movies. Rather, it has also affected the investigative dramas that the world used to love not too long ago. Sherlock Holmes and his iconic apartment are not as interesting to the average viewer anymore. However, the year 2020 brought a great surprise to us. The Apple TV+ bought an all-star team for the TV adaption of the 2012 novel by William Landay - Defending Jacob.
Chris Evans has not changed a lot for this brilliant show. The only significant difference is his heavy-beard that only adds some years to the 39-year-old actor. He plays Andy Barber, a district attorney and a passionate family man, a father and a husband. His presence is crucial in the show and in the life of the Barber family. Andy is married to Laurie Barber (Michelle Dockery) who works for childcare services. They have a child together, a teenager that seems just normal at a glance. Jaeden Martell plays Jacob or Jake Barber in the show.
The family lives in a Massachusetts family home with Andy being the district attorney, providing for the family and being a respectable member of the local community. Everyone knows and likes him within the community. Laurie is successful at work as well while being a good housewife. Their son Jacob goes to the local high school but does not seem to have too many friends. As may teenagers these days, he enjoys playing video games and surfing through the web. His parents are often curious about what his social life is like but never interfere too much. From the very beginning of the show, it is evident that the family enjoys good, stable and calm dynamics whilst being successful and well-respected among their community.
When the drama truly kicks in
However, the stability and peace changes with the complete horror and chaos as Jacob gets arrest for the alleged murder of his schoolmate. The body of a young boy was found in the park, dumped into the small alley near the high school. Soon after the discovery of the body, the police find that it is covered with Jacob’s fingerprints. Andy, who was the leading attorney in the case is removed amidst the allegation of Jacob.
Soon after the accusations against Jacob, Andy is temporarily fired from his position as the general attorney. From this point onward, the entire saga of defending Jacob will all the potential resources begins. The family, including both Andy and Laurie, do everything they can to support their son and prove his innocence. Not even for a brief moment they suspected anything weird or blamed Jacob for what had happened to the boy from his school.
The main mystery begins as further evidence against Jacob is discovered not only by the police but also by Andy himself. He finds a knife covered in blood that was found near the dead body. To hide it from the investigation, he gets disposed of the evidence. Neither Laurie nor the investigation finds out about the knife and its existence. However, Laurie soon suspects that Jacob might not be as innocent as everyone thought.
Another breaking point in the plot is when Andy’s family finds out about his father and his past. Prior to the investigation, everyone thought that he lived far from Andy and did not care about him too much. However, as the investigation leads towards the discovery of Jacob’s grandfather, Andy decides to tell his family the truth himself. His father is serving his life sentence for raping and brutally murdering a young woman. Shocked by the news, Laurie becomes even more confused and starts blaming Andy for what has happened.
The entire show is full of plot twists and mysterious stories from the past of main characters’ lives. Yet, the biggest mystery is Jacob himself. Every viewer will notice the cold blue eyes of the main character in the show. His speech is often irrelevant and insignificant, not addressing the issue of what had happened. He tries to keep living his normal life but soon realizes that it is no longer possible.
The finale of the show will not be loved by many. There are still too many questions left without answers and the story just seems unfinished. However, I can assure you that every second of Defending Jacob is worth watching and evaluating. Each and every episode leaves a new question at the end, making us furious for the answers. Some might say the show is nothing special. For instance, The Guardian rated it with 3 stars. Yet, there is no way of telling but watching the show by yourself. Will Andy manage to defend Jacob? That is a less important part of the show. The biggest asset of this production is the character development and exquisite filming that makes it so unique and pleasant to watch.

The movies offer wonderful food for thought and huge doses of much-needed escapism. However, some of the realities they claim to depict are heightened or straight up glossed over for the benefit of entertainment. Of course, you knew that. But, as a casino aficionado, you perhaps did not realize the extent to which the beloved games are twisted for the storyline to work. Here are a few correctives to common misconceptions about casinos and gambling promulgated by cinema.
Violence is Exaggerated
Famed films from the 1990s such as Casino proclaim that you will most assuredly get beaten up by thugs if you win too much money, or rock the boat a great deal. While films like Casino are loosely based on true events, the terrible story reflects the absolute worst-case scenario. Walking into a casino doesn’t necessarily mean you will be walking into a cesspool of sex and violence.
The Games Are About Strategy
The people handling poker or pontoon games in films usually look ridiculous: thuggish, showy, and seem to know very little about the game itself. In reality, everything about gambling is about strategy and having a handle on the rules and arithmetic. It is not just about dumb luck - although that can have a hand at times. Most people are familiar with the games and assess poker or study pontoon rules closely to be able to win. Hardly anyone wants to start off their night at a casino by wasting their precious dollars right off the bat on something they don’t understand.
Casinos Aren’t Owned by the Mafia
A widely promulgated myth by cinema is that all casinos are mere fronts for a massive money-laundering scheme, prostitution ring, or some other form of organized crime. Yes, some Las Vegas casinos have indeed had ties with the mob in the past, but what we see on film is something else entirely. The vast majority of casinos are owned by Native American communities in this country, and they are highly regulated and extremely safe. In fact, profits from these casinos are used to funnel money back into their local communities through the funding of much needed social and educational programs. So, don’t buy the mafia hype.
It’s Raining Money
So many films make it seem as though once you hit your stride in a game, or luck seems to be on your side, that it will be raining thousands and thousands of dollars on your head in minutes. Or, those who work as counters seem to be making more in an hour than what most of us earn in a year. This couldn’t be farther from the truth. Most card counters make minimum wage, and they rarely do enough to bankroll tens of thousands of dollars in an evening. And, geniuses hoping to crack the code while playing poker don’t make that much either. This idea makes for a great scene in a film, but they don’t necessarily translate to real life.
While films like Ocean’s 11 are excellent for their entertainment value and witty dialogue, they don’t necessarily have much to do with what happens on the ground in a casino. A lot more prep goes into actually playing the games, and the home of slot machines and blackjack are rarely the scary caves they seem to be on the big screen.
A television in your sitting room with a few comfortable couches cannot beat the unmatched experience of watching a movie on a big 4K HD Screen. That is why we all run to the cinemas to enjoy our favorites movies.
However, having a home theater is infinitely more convenient than going to the grimy cinema that charges a lot yet doesn’t allow us to bring our own snacks. So why not set up your home theater? With the advancement in microchip technology, the home television industry has made immense progress.
HD flat screens have replaced the old Television boxes, and the accompanying audio systems are all professional-grade as well. You can even watch 3D movies while sitting on your home couch! However, setting up a theater is much more complicated than it sounds.
From choosing the best TV set to selecting the perfect sound experience, everything needs to be considered. This article will arm you with all these useful tips required to set up a home theater, so you can then have the viewing experience of your dreams.
1. Select an Ideal Viewing Spot
Scientists came up with the conclusion that the ideal distance from HDTVs can be found with a simple formula. Just multiply the screen’s diagonal size by 1.2, and you will get your answer. It would be best if you placed your seating accordingly.
2. Having a Small Room? Try Sound Bar!
If you are one of them who visits theater now and then, you must be addicted to the ultimate cinematic experience. Though HDTVs provide a decent sound, still no comparison can be made with the professional speakers. So, what can be done? A soundbar can resolve this concern.
This horizontal piece that combines multiple speakers into one is ideal for replicating the experience of cinema. Try searching for the latest versions of the soundbar as the contemporary styled design comes with a sleeker look. It can easily fit below your screen, providing you a matchless experience.
3. Add a Subwoofer
One thing that is commonly missing from every home theater is the rumble effect on walls; the thing that becomes a reason to visit the theater. However, many theater fans do not know that a subwoofer can provide enough oomph from the sound system. Adding it to your audio setting can take your experience from low to high.
Tip:
Always install the subwoofer on the floor. Never plan to place it at the back of any furniture. You will end up with a rattling sound from your cabinets. Also, keep the neighbors in mind. Try to keep the subwoofer in an open space. Place it next to the wall, but the wall should not be the one you share with your neighbors.
4. Less Space for Speakers, Camouflage Them!
Gone are the days when speakers were kept in separate wooden cabinets. Then, the time came when standing speakers became highly popular. Thanks to new technology, you can now get the sound quality of large speakers in a small size.
Since the speakers are small, they can be easily covered with a decoration piece, books, or any other thing.
5. Wall Mount Can Do Wonders
The first thing that clicks the mind when setting up a home theater is a surround sound system. Its sound quality transports you to the real world of cinema. In a commercial theater, speakers are placed near seats to provide better sound. However, in a home theater, that’s just not possible. Professional theaters are built with all these requirements in mind. But obviously, our homes aren’t built like that.
Wall-mounted speakers are an excellent alternative; their sound is clear and transports everywhere in the room. At home, we often push the seats or place them right beside the wall. Thus, placing the speakers becomes impossible. However, it is possible with a wall mount. Set your wall mount in a way that members of your family get the perfect audio.
What is more, use home theater carpeting to improve the sound further. Carpets not only provide better sound; they also provide additional seating. Cleaning carpets is easy as well, grab a vacuum cleaner, and you are set. You can even have them professionally cleaned once every 3 months.
6. 3D Requires A Different Sitting
If you are planning for the 3D viewing, you need to prepare for your seating arrangement. Keep in mind that 3D requires you to sit in an upfront position, so make sure you have enough appropriate seating options.
7. Avoid Natural Light
HDTVs are easy to place in a variety of ways and angles. You need to check the position before you drill holes in the wall. Most importantly, sunlight and even artificial lights can affect your viewing experience. Refrain from placing the TV in an area where sun exposure is more.
8. Go for The Curved TV Set
The latest HDTVs come in a curved style. These are helpful when creating a home theater as they save from the extra glare and provides a proper viewing angle. Instead of relocating your old HDTV and getting worried with the right angles, get this curved version, and stay safe!
9. Headphones Can Do Magic
A combination of headphones with TV may sound awkward, but it can actually do wonders. If you are enjoying the TV alone, headphones are a practical choice. The corded headphones are long gone, connect your wireless headphones, and enjoy. There are some headphones that you can plug directly into your remote control.
10. Plug-In Before You Drill
You must be tempted to install everything in one go. It’s natural because you have invested a good amount of buying furniture, HDTV, and sitting arrangements. However, if you install things before checking, you will end up drilling a lot of holes in the wall. The overall look will be spoiled, and you have to put in more effort. Thus, it is better to plug in the HDTV and sound system to ensure the right position before you finally drill to set up things. If you are planning to set a home theater, go ahead! Keep the tips mentioned above in mind to have an impeccable experience.

We are all addicted to something, and usually, we’re not even aware of it. Some of us enjoy watching the same TV show every day, while others compulsively coil locks of hair around their fingers. Celebrities have the same obsessions and compulsions as the rest of us. They’re people too.
The phrase “celebrity addictions” brings drugs and alcohol to mind, but the truth is that famous people face a full spectrum of obsessions and fixations. From celebrity gamblers to shopping addicts, here’s what the rich like to fixate on.
Olivia Munn
Hollywood beauty Olivia Munn has a bizarre obsession. The actress compulsively rips out her eyelashes. This behavioral disorder, formally known as trichotillomania, is usually caused by stress or anxiety-like nail-biting or cracking your knuckles. Trichotillomaniacs tear hair off their bodies.
Munn tried hypnotherapy with some success but confesses that when she is stressed, she still turns to lash-ripping.
Emma Watson
Actress Emma Watson is obsessed with learning new things. Judging by her most popular movie roles - Hermione (from Harry Potter) and Belle (from Beauty and the Beast) - we are not surprised at all. Both characters are real book lovers who read constantly.
Watson reads a lot of books too, but her obsession with learning new things doesn’t stop there. As a UN Women Goodwill Ambassador and a women's rights activist, she travels the world meeting people, experiencing unfamiliar cultures, and absorbing new ideas every day. Watson has said that she’ll never stop learning because she is completely addicted to knowledge.
Donald Trump
It may be hard to believe, but President Trump is reportedly afraid of germs. Strangely enough, even though he is a self-confessed germophobe, he resisted wearing a protective face mask when the COVID-19 pandemic struck.
Despite declining a mask, it wasn't hard for the President to keep his hands clean and avoid handshakes because he has fastidiously avoided dirt and human contact since at least the beginning of his real estate career.
The President uses hand sanitizer frequently and he reportedly doesn’t like to be in the same room with sick people. He is so obsessed with germs that he doesn’t allow anyone who is sniffling or coughing to enter the Oval Office.
Rihanna
This 32-year-old singing sensation, a native of Barbados, famously spends much of her wealth on luxury houses, rare jewelry, and expensive clothes. What you may not suspect is that the world’s richest female musician is addicted to contemporary art. It’s not like we needed more reasons to idolize Rihanna, but there you have it: On top of being a badass, she is an art lover too.
Rihanna is a regular visitor at art fairs and galleries around the world. She has an impressive art collection that includes “Get Up, Stand Up,” a painting of Bob Marley by Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood, which the singer bought for her 20th birthday. Another piece we admire: a $160,000 portrait of Marilyn Monroe made of Swarovski crystals.
Megan Fox
You might say that buying a lot of expensive shoes is a silly way to waste money. Others say designer shoes are real masterpieces, so spending thousands of dollars on the best of them is justified.
As for Megan Fox, she is obsessed with buying shoes. You can find practically anything in her collection - from smart Oxfords to glittery stilettos and delicate sandals. Fox doesn't care how expensive they are; she says she sees each purchase as an investment.
This Hollywood actress says her love affair with beautiful shoes began before she became famous. The first pair to merit a place in her collection? A pair of Roberto Cavalli heels worth $600.
Charlize Theron
Though she says she never liked the title of the world’s most beautiful woman, Charlize Theron definitely deserves it. Her flawless skin, ideal body, and healthy hair add up to a perfect conception of beauty in the modern world.
If you think Theron owes her beauty to healthy eating habits, think again. Not only does she like to eat junk food from time to time, but she says she's actually addicted to it. The actress once said: “I’ll take anything fried.” While more and more of her colleagues in Hollywood promote vegan food and gluten-free diets, Theron stays faithful to old American favorites - burgers and fries.

THE TRUTH-- 4 STARS
The expression of “holding court” may have historical roots with convening judges and members of royalty, but, make no mistake, actors can fit that idiom as well. A giddy movie fan can name memorable speeches and isolated moments of a performer taking over single scenes. Once in a great while, the energies of talent and material align where heralded thespians seemingly hold court over an entire film and not merely individual scenes. They do so in fashion where every positive trait and competing negative flaw are on full and captivating display. Hirokazu Kore-eda’s The Truth is one of those films and the radiant star at its center is Catherine Deneuve.
To pull off holding court without reducing matters to the preening or showy variety, the performer must have screen presence. Deneuve, the ageless ingenue, “frigid femme fatale,” and “grandes dame” of French cinema, has wattage for a thousand cameras, even now in her mid-70s. With that stature, compelling shockwaves come at will. The acting awe within The Truth is that Deneuve’s prestige is matched moment-to-moment by Academy Award winner Juliette Binoche, a contemporary, if you will, every bit as powerful as the senior. Their pairing as an estranged mother and daughter in the celebrity world writes cinematic scripture.
LESSON #1: LATE CAREER ADJUSTMENTS-- Deneuve is Fabienne Dangeville, an illustrious Cesar Award-winning actress who has reached a career point where the offered roles are smaller and less frequent. She is embarking on two projects to reignite her profile. The first is taking a supporting role in an existential science fiction film opposite the younger “It Girl” actress of the moment named Manon Lenoir (the debuting Manon Clavel). Sizing up what she considers competitors more than collaborators at table reads, Fabienne finds much of this genre of film beneath her to a large degree. She’s in this movie for the gravitas to give Lenior a rub of credibility. Yet, she sees talent in Lenoir that reminds her of a peer named Sarah she lost from her own newcomer roots years ago.
LESSON #2: HOW YOU PRESENT YOURSELF TO PEOPLE-- Swallowed pride does not censor Fabienne (or the real Catherine coming through) in the slightest. Her frank and hot take observations on the state of cinema, surprise with their sharp veracity. Much of the film’s comedy comes from these candid revelations. The former diva earns “witch” comparisons and the ‘petty” label. She looks down on the help, longtime associates, and even her own family. You wonder how much of this is Fabienne’s true core or if she’s acting all the time to maintain a purposeful altruistic image.
Fabienne’s second initiative is publishing a grand autobiography of her celebrity life. Her adoring public may eagerly await her storied treatise, but her alienated daughter Lumir (Binoche) does not. Remembering a hard childhood of absence and ambivalence, Lumir suspects the sugar-coated content of the book and rightfully so. She has come to Fabienne’s home with her author husband Hank (Ethan Hawke) and daughter Charlotte (Clementine Garnier) to support her work and bury a few hatchets. Hawke plays the listener and playful dad, himself someone turned sluggish by a sad career.
LESSON #2: REVISIONIST MEMORIES-- Fabienne tries to cover her written perspectives with the line “you can’t trust memory.” Such is true, but revision can push back truth. Likewise, reassessment can negate regrets that need to be corrected or addressed. As they spend time together on and off the film set and within her childhood home filled with more bad triggers than good ones, Lumir confronts her mother and peels back their complicated history.
LESSON #4: THE CAPABILITY TO FORGIVE-- Both Dangeville women have an initial incapability at pardoning the other. Fabienne must come to see not just her career mortality, but a familial one, when it comes to learning modesty and truly owning mistakes. Lumir needs an open heart to welcome that after decades of guarded disappointment. Any resolution hangs on those challenges and releases.
In those moments, the score of Alexei Aigui (I Am Not Your Negro) matches the emotions of the observed lives behind closed doors. Autumnal soft piano pushes a pendulum between levity and sorry. Binoche asserts herself and becomes the true nucleus of The Truth. The way she shifts from hurt rigidity to softened empathy is formidable. Never the ingenue or the sought-after knockout, Juliette Binoche has reached a level of respect equal or greater to Deneuve already in her career. Clouds of Sils Maria was a similar showcase where she is already a matron passing torches. This is but one more she rightfully receives.
The richest artistry comes from the written storytelling from Kore-eda. Without his created character dynamics, all the finery and stellar casting are merely shells. The Truth is a ripe role for Catherine Deneuve. The fullness of that fruit is provided by poetry from the director, allowing for all of that successful court-holding. She is indeed the show. Paired with Binoche, Deneuve sparkles a genteel look underneath her character’s caustic honesty. The character may be chipped for flaws, but her star power is indestructible.
Warner Bros. have today confirmed that Christopher Nolan’s Tenet has been delayed once more. Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the release of Tenet was seen as a major milestone in the reopening of the cinema industry. Toby Emerich from the studio was quoted by the BBC as saying “We are not treating Tenet like […]
This is going to sound unsophisticated in rhetorical philosophy, but we weren’t really meant to wear shoes everywhere we go. Our animalistic roots used to have us traveling our terrains by our bare feet. It’s primitive and odd to a point, but there’s something to having the earth between your toes. Watch Vivian Ward in Pretty Woman or Paul Bratter in Barefoot in the Park. There’s freeing comfort to be found there. Pluck a few strings to it and you have your own nirvana. The free spirits in the film Dirt Music are drawn by that hope of inspiration and liberation.
For anyone over the age of five-years-old who doesn’t have “The Gravel Foot” anymore, we know not all natural surfaces are easy and lush. The sensation of each pace toughens and prepares the heels and toes for the next one. Such is life as well. The literal and figurative barefoot steps of the characters from Tim Winton’s celebrated novel have tread over the hard grounds of loss and regret. The developed calluses mix with the ever-present dirt for messy lifestyles. Any songs present croon to that lamentation. Alas, the titular melodies advertised to break down the melodrama blow away weakly with the wind.
Three pairs of aching dogs inhabit that mature head space and emotional condition of Dirt Music as they occupy the stunning topography and oceanic expanses of Western Australia. Scottish transplant Kelly Macdonald’s Georgie Jutland is the unhappy wife of legit Aussie David Wenham’s local honcho fisherman Jim Buckridge. He is the town champ on the open water who throws his clout, ale pints, and philandering gaze around with dominance. Jim is the provider of finery apart from the basic locals, making Georgie his younger trophy wife. She is a midday wine-drinker who takes midnight swims to clear her head and refresh her body. Georgie is looking for outlets away from her stuffy and discarded home life.
The intriguing one she finds is the scruffy, dog-loving drifter Lu Fox, played by American pretender Garrett Hedlund. He lives simple and scratches a modest existence poaching Jim’s lobster pots for food and finances. With (too) quick and smoldering chemistry, Georgie shags Lu during a getaway to Perth before even learning his name. Their spiral begins an affair that upsets the upstanding Jim. Underlying interconnections come to light as this triangle learns the gravity of their opposing desires.
LESSON #1: CARRYING ON A PHYSICAL OR EMOTIONAL AFFAIR-- The emotionally thirsty Georgie asks many observant questions in probing the insoluble Lu. The soft-spoken man asks the woman in return “How do adults do this? We’re not teenagers.” Sex can be a comfort, no doubt, but real intimacy is more than that. What bond Lu and Georgie is that they both know what it means to truly touch someone.
LESSON #2: THE WRECKING ACHE OF PAST SORROWS-- All three lead characters tramp with some measure of private misery and self-appointed failed responsibility. Jim lost his previous wife and has bullying mistakes on his heart. Georgie feels like she lost her youthful vigor in settling for Jim’s domestic comfort. Lu, a former troubadour who used to make “dirt music,” has it the worst. He lost his musician family Darkie and Sal (George Mason and folk musician Julia Stone) and his young niece Bird (Ava Caryofyllis) in a tragic accident. Lu still has stark, haunting visions of Bird which push him to retreat town for his own grieving and rustic isolation. That trek sends Georgie and Jim after him.
Those opening two paragraphs are the mature headspace and emotional condition of Dirt Music. The narrative that follows from Wonder screenwriter Jack Thorne is as wayward as the hearts involved. The struggles have a distance to them for the viewer. Winton’s best-selling novel has been sought after for quite some time, encircling the interested likes of Nicole Kidman, Rachel Weisz, Heath Ledger, and Russell Crowe over the years. Director Gregor Jordan (Ned Kelly, Buffalo Soldiers) found the window to get this made and assembled trustworthy talent. Bigger names would have made this a glamour project.
Instead, the resolute actors commit to the layers of their performances. It would have been very easy to make Wenham the one-note belligerent and combative spouse, but his portion of the hurt adds consequence. A character like Lu has become the gravelly usual for Hedlund, who has made quite the recent career playing to the target of soulful disquiet. The strongest, without question, is Macdonald. The spreading of her character’s fractured wings and her dedication to seeking better love comes through in the actress’s svelte strength.
The geography of the Dampier Peninsula and Esperance areas of the southern continent (secured by location manager Brett Dowson) traversed high and low by cinematographer Sam Chiplin colors the solitude. Chiplin’s lenses are gentle and put brightness to the dark human flaws. The odyssey of it all has visual draw. The same goes for its signature sound.
LESSON #3: MUSIC IS A RELEASE-- Dirt Music’s soundtrack is peppered with often lovely balladry supervised by Kle Savidge and backed by a still score from Craig Armstrong. Hedlund (Country Strong) is no stranger to music and supports the signing of Mason and Stone admirably. With toes tapping the loam, there is a longing tranquility to this tone. Worries fade and sadness lifts. However, the strength of this film’s songs cannot stir the heavier human drama. If music is meant to be the binder, there’s not nearly enough of it.
For the first time since Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) and for the first time since the COVID-19 quarantine, Ian Simmons was able to assemble the fabled “Earth’s Mightiest Critics” on his Kicking the Seat podcast for a brand new comic book film. No, it’s not Black Widow from the MCU or Wonder Woman 1984 for the DCEU. Those ports are delayed and closed. We shine a light on the Netflix hitter The OId Guard based on Greg Rucka’s graphic novel that ran on the Image Comics imprint. Ian led myself, David Fowlie of Keeping It Reel, and Emmanuel Noisette of E-Man’s Movie Reviews for a lively dais! For those keeping score, this was my 40th appearance on Ian’s program.
